NINJA Question –
NINJA MCQ Question:
What is the best thing a personal computer (PC) user should do if a program takes longer than usual to load or execute?
A. Test the system by running a different application program.
B. Reboot the system.
C. Run antivirus software.
D. Back up the hard disk files to floppies.
Answer: C – Run antivirus software
The best approach to the described condition is to run antivirus software. A program taking longer than usual to load or execute is a symptom of a virus. Many viruses will spread and cause additional damage if many normal procedures are performed. Use of an appropriate antivirus program may identify and even eliminate a virus infection.
Testing the system by running a different application program can enable a virus to spread.
Rebooting the system can enable a virus to spread.
Backing up hard disk files to floppies can enable a virus to spread.
*I will preface this with that I have not read the IT topic outlines in my Gleim material.
I thought this was a trick question. I chose B, as the BEST thing I would do in practice, Reboot the system.
I’m an IT expert and I would not automatically assume I have a virus if my application is taking longer to load than usual and no where in this question does it hint at malicious intent. I would reboot my system if applications were slow in loading and see if that corrected the problem. I would need to have strong evidence that a virus might be in play before I scan the system for viruses, especially since the majority of business PCs are running some form of active antivirus software in the background.
So according to the AICPA, you should be running antivirus software every time your extra large Excel/Access files take a few extra minutes to load because you might have a virus, even though the user is taxing the system by multitasking and playing YouTube in the background on a 5-10 year old PC, which is what many businesses are running on today.
