Are Gleim questions unnecessarily extremely difficult?

    Hi guys,

I’m using Gleim CPA Review is my main study material for REG and it seems the questions are extremely difficult. I’ve had the opportunity to do Becker REG questions which I perform well on, however, when I attempt questions on the same topic in Gleim, I’m really struggling.

Its making me wonder if I’m not studying properly.

Should there be such are huge difference between Becker and Gleim considering its the same material?

I would like to hear others feedback as I want to know if I’m doing something wrong or not as ready as I think I am.

    Thanks.

Yes they are but look at it this way – they over-prepare you, and that's not a bad thing at all. Some people will disagree with me. But, I think it makes sense. If you can do those, you can do the ones on the CPA exams. I wish I'd bought Gleim's full course package for all 4 parts (I just have the textbooks and have been using those since I dropped Roger.)

Extremely difficult? No doubt. Unnecessarily? Not at all. Gleim does one thing good and that is demoralize you when you are working through the test bank.

My advice (and take it with a grain of salt since I got a 60 in FAR, just retook it today) is that Gleim questions are a very good way to prepare yourself, much tougher than Roger for example, however ,don't waste hours trying to understand their paragraph-long answer explanations for their very hard ones, its all about the basics and fundamentals. You will never get mcqs that long in the exam. I use Roger for the videos, and Gleim for the questions since the software is a lot faster and user-friendly than Roger's.

Ain't that the truth. Roger's software was just a pain in the ass. Whoever formatted the SIMs was on some kind of weird drugs.

That's interesting though, about Gleim demoralizing the user while working thru the test bank. Roger's software had its own way of doing that too.
I've heard people say that Gleim's will not let you go on to a new topic until you've mastered the current one, or something like that. I actually like the set-up of http://www.cpare viewforfree.com
While you can't go back and review the ones you missed, you can re-do the whole set of questions over again if you didn't get a good score.

@ Bobby I feel it is unnecessary and waste of time . Some may disagree , but I realized it quickly and shifted my focus to MDS and Surgent , they prepared me well .

I used Gleim test bank for all sections thus far, Gleim's REG prep was mostly a waste of time. They have a lot of questions you will never see on the actual exam (and a lot that will be). Normally, I agree with the above that it overprepares you and is a good study tool, but for REG I ditched it in my final review and stuck with my Becker course.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think its good to be over prepared, but it seems like Gleim is making me move at a real slow pace.
I can normally do 40 to 50 MCQ from Becker in under an hour. It almost takes me the same time to do 20 to 25 in Gleim.

Dragon87 , how did it go ? Compared to Q1 is it more difficult?

One thing I've always said, some programs are way over the too difficult and some people like that and seek it out. I didn't, I like what I practice to be what I see in real life which is why I enjoyed rogers RELATIVELY easier/shorter questions. His questions are much more in line with what you see on exam day. Rogers qs worked great for me. But in response to your post, yes the gleim questions are unnecessarily tougher.

@satyakatiwal I did a lot better the second time, mostly because I changed to Roger for the videos. The exam itself was pretty much the same, mcqs were not that bad, and the first 6 sims were straightforward, If you can master using the FASB codification for research you can get most of the sims right, dont be intimidated by all the review documents, they basically made ever sim a DRS. Oh and the last two sims were hard and long I hope one of them was a pretest. Im trying to decide between AUD, BEC and REG to study for next.

I've been wondering whether to take Gleim alone or Wiley with Gleim test bank. Now I wonder if Gleim would be overkill too.

FAR, AUD, and BEC are great. REG, yes, I feel my brain was killed.

So far I really liked Gleim for all sections except REG. The REG section just seems silly. They expect you to memorize every single detail about the tax code, securities laws, etc. It's just not gonna happen. I wish I had an alternative study material for this section but I don't so I'm just slogging through Gleim.

Have the same problem. I passed REG so far and failed BEC and AUD so I decided to buy the Gleim test bank to supplement Wiley. But, as I was going through the questions on Gleim, I couldn't help thinking that the questions were unnecessarily difficult and not a good example of what we would see on the exam. So I ended up going back to Wiley. I am probably going to use Gleim for the SIMs though because Wiley's SIMs are way too easy / weak compared to what I got on the test. I agree with some of the above comments though that their goal is to probably OVER prepare you, which isn't a bad thing.

Gleim was so tough that when I took the actual exams, I was actually nervous, because I thought I was doing terrible on the actual exam because it seemed easier than the Gleim Review.

I had no luck with previous like Wiley's. After switching to Gleim, I pass all 4 exams consecutively.

Their best feature was the “Study Session” which provides detailed explanations for each correct & wrong answers. I spent hours using that feature.
