Wiley CPA Review books – Becker CPA Review user’s perspective

I know there are a ton of people who have used Wiley books in their review and have passed the exams. This is in no way meant to diss anybody. Use what works for you.

However, I was looking at a Wiley book today and is that book detailed! In some areas where Becker takes a page or two, Wiley has 30+ pages!

People who study with Wiley, how do you have enough time to go through everything? It looks like so much information, all jumbled up. It reminds me of a law book!

I have taken two exams so far using Becker, and I feel like I was 100% prepared…like I couldn’t have possibly been more prepared than I was.

So…what does Wiley offer in addition to Becker that will help on the exam? It seems like it’s just entirely too much information, overkill. With Becker, their big thing is that they tell you what you need to know and nothing more. So far that’s held true for my exams.

I don’t think I could possibly stay focused using the Wiley book. It just seems like overkill to me. I haven’t read them and have never used Yaeger…that’s just my first impression.

I know that Wiley (and Yaeger) are “teaching courses” whereas Becker is a review course. Do they actually teach you topics like you would learn in school, spending a lot of time on each area? I can’t imagine spending so much time on each topic. How do you have time to cover and master everything?

I used Wiley for REG and I was very happy with it. At the time my work wouldn't pay for any review courses, so I picked the book up at my local book store for like $40…well within my budget. It was alot, but I found it to be very organized and helpful. I was doing taxes at the time, so I was able to mostly skim through the tax sections since I was already familiar with all the concepts and I didn't really worry about the $$ cut-off amounts (except where they concerened dependency expemtions). My main strategy overall was to just skim the chapter (maybe), and then just review the answers to the questions. I would not even read the questions, just the answers.

The questions covered all the concepts, so when reading the answer explanations, I found it almost to be an outline of what I needed to know. I know it may sound kind of out there, but it worked for me.

Well I mostly only use the wiley book for the MC questions and detailed answers. I don't really learn from reading it…in fact I don't even really read it. It is too boring.

How much does just the Becker book cost for FAR?

    AUD - 81, BEC - 74, 80, FAR - 82, REG - 81

I am Becker user and I like Becker much more than Yeager maybe for the reason someone mentioned before: it is well organized without giving you all the small picky detail. I bought CRAm Yeager for REG and almost didn't use it and didn't like it.

Now however, I have to study for FAR for a third time and this is not easy task. I found some very old (6-7 years old) yeager DVDs someone gave me long time ago and I had forgotten about it. I am listening to it without the book (but with Jeff's notes) and I feel like it provides a nice “other prospective” to my study. When you restudy for a second or third time you need some other boost that just reread and rewatch your old materials. I will let you know how it turns out. Well, lets hope none of you guys need to go through it for the third time like me.

My experience might be a touch dated (about 3 years) since I passed BEC, but I also used Wiley and Becker. I noticed that they both shared about 85% of the same MCQs, which is AICPA-released questions. The other 15% are questions that both companies add into the material, either through independent development or otherwise (it's expensive to create those).

My Wiley book had a bunch of short chapters on very small topics, like IT systems, computer access and security, with maybe 20 practice MCQs, that Becker didn't cover at all; those helped me out when I took the exam.

    I really can't pass again!

    financeguy,

to answer your question I don't think they will sell you just the book. But the book along with the dvd will cost you $1,000 for one section only. The dvd includes lectures going over the book and reading the book. They give some examples and make jokes to make you remember certain topics. It also includes MCQs for all chapters covered by the book (further divided by subchapters). It also has the nice feature to be able to to click go back to the place in the book where the topic is discussed for each particular question.
