When Becker simply doesn’t work…

So, just saw my score for REG (73) and I KNOW that Becker is not working for me right now. Second time around, did all the questions, all the SIMS (again). Still gotta see where exactly I ‘messed’ up with the official results email but I need to know if there is a review course out there that really worked out for someone that had a similar experience with Becker.

Becker worked for me on BEC and FAR (and hopefully AUD on 11/18), but it just simply doesn’t work for me when it comes to REG. I work full time, have a son (husband works out of town–so I’m kind of a single parent during the week), and have been waking up at 4am every morning to get studying done. For the first time during my second go around with REG I felt like I was actually learning. I also got sick right before the exam and felt miserable the whole time I was in the Prometric center–but that’s not an excuse for me–I took FAR while even sicker and at least passed.

I am wondering if I just memorized all the answers for the 1100 questions on the Becker software and that’s why I’m so shocked at my score. Any help would be greatly appreciated–I just can’t believe it. Oh–and supplementing with NINJA notes and audio did NOT work either–I feel that I know the concepts, just need to find how to apply them to different scenarios. Should I go with the Wiley test bank or buy the REG section from another review course (i.e. Roger, CPA Excel, etc)?

    PLEASE help!

    BEC - 86
    FAR - 76
    AUD - 73, 86
    REG - 61, 73, 82

    DONE!!

I feel like your issue here is just that you've become too comfortable with the Becker practice questions. If I had one complaint with Becker, it is that their test bank was fairly limited. You might just want to supplement the material with the Wiley test bank so you have more to practice with. I don't think I'd splurge on a whole new review course just yet. I know lots of people disagree with me on this, but I think the Becker instructional material is top-notch.

    FAR - 84 PASSED
    AUD - 93 PASSED
    REG - 84 PASSED

Yes, that could be the case. I am worried about any tax rule changes that might go into the 2013 REG exam–but it seems like the concepts stay basically the same from year to year. I will definitely wait for one of Jeff's Wiley test bank sales. Just need to re-motivate myself to finish up AUD and take it one step at a time.

For the first time in my life I feel like I might just be plain dumb and not deserve the CPA certification…but the third time's a charm.

    FAR - 76
    AUD - 73, 86
    REG - 61, 73, 82

I think the Wiley Test Bank is a great supplement. I have been using it for REG, and I think that a good portion of their questions are a lot different from the Becker questions. I also have a tendency to memorize the questions rather than really knowing the material. I think having the bigger base has been helpful. I guess I wont know for sure (my retake is Tuesday), but I am hoping it is 🙂

    REG 72, 86 and DONE!!!
    BEC 80 🙂
    FAR 72, 78 🙂
    AUD 73, 76 🙂

The Wiley price hasn't changed and I won't lower it … it will be $87 if you buy it now or buy it later.

Jeff– is the info updated for the 2013 exam, though? I'd like to purchase it ASAP and keep working on it so I don't forget the concepts.

@MsMeyer, did you complete up to 90% of the homework? If so, you're covered under the Becker Promise.

They should automatically update the materials for you.

In the last two weeks before the test, I purchased the Wiley Test Bank for REG so I could have exposure to different types of questions. I was hoping that the new questions would keep me on my toes and force me to see things from a different perspective. And I think that helped.

Also, really evaluating my weaker areas helped as well. And I tried to find pieces of what I was learning in the media. The whole fiscal cliff and presidential candidate tax policy conversations helped a lot. It put it in a much larger perspective and helped me understand the why behind some of these things. Tax blogs and podcasts. Tax Talk Today is a nice boring podcast. Gawd, and its an hour and a half long but it's kind of funny how animated and passionate some of these tax accountants can get about forms and deductions etc. It made me wish to never be a tax accountant.

I'm a bit frugal so I tried to keep it as cheap as possible. I had to think long and hard about Wiley, especially after the cost of Becker. So I did as much google searching as I could about different tax topics. CPAreviewforfree is pretty good. Incorporates some things that aren't even in Becker.
