What Is To Be Expected of REG Research Sim and Does Becker Prepare You For Them?

Hello, I’ve been reading these forums for a while now, and this is my first post. I tried searching the forums and couldn’t find a clear answer. I’m starting off my CPA journey with REG on April 13. I have heard people mentioning a research section of the exam. What does that entail? Is there a part of the Becker review that prepares you for it? I’m looking through what I have for Becker and nothing about it is jumping out at me. I had to do plenty of research in grad school but that was two years ago for me. I appreciate everyone’s help in advance, thanks!

For the REG, AUD and FAR exams, you will have at least one research question per exam (sometimes two, but usually just one). This will be in addition to the other simulations you will receive on those three exams. A question will come up such as, “Sandy received a gift of stock valued at $2,000 from a friend. Which code section and subsection provides whether the gift is includible in gross income?” That is an example from Becker in which you need to use the Authoritative Literature that properly addresses the question, be it under TS (Tax Services) or the IRC. These can be found in Becker as the last simulations in the homework for every chapter. You probably already know that BEC does not have these simulations and only has three “writing communications” which are much different. Anyways, good luck with REG!
