    Hi everyone,

I’m just starting to take the CPA exam and am studying far with Becker currently. The trouble is I watched 10 min of the lecture videos and I’m getting nothing, he goes way to fast and theres no way I can keep up. I’m thinking I should just go ahead and just read without watching the videos, is that a good idea? I’ve never been one to learn from lectures in class so I think it should work out fine.

You should go with whatever you think will work for you. Read the book yourself and see how you do on the questions. I liked the lectures so I sat through all of them but I know some people hated them and didn't bother. You have to find what works for you.

I watched the videos for REG (my first test) and didn't find them helpful at all. They seemed to drone on about the easy concepts and quickly cover topics that were more confusing.

I didn't watch them for either AUD or BEC and scored well.

I think going through the material at your own pace is more useful (at least for me personally). There is an option to look at the “ebook” so you can still see their highlighting/notes without watching the videos. I suggest using that as a reference as you go through the book.

I watched the lectures for REG and found them only marginally helpful. I'm currently skipping them for AUD, due to more of a time crunch than anything.

If the problem is the lecturer going too fast, you might consider skimming the chapter before watching the lecture. That way you already know what he's covering and can focus in on the details a little more. This will obviously be more time consuming, but if it helps you master the material it's probably worth it.

When I watch the lectures, anytime he skips something or goes fast, I pause it and read it myself. I also pause the videos and make notecards as I go. If reading the material is best for you, I agree with GreenMonkey, that seems like a good way to study.

I usually just watch the lectures, do the highlighting and notes then go back and read the chapter again.

Hmm, something I have been dong that has really worked well is writing notes while listening to the lectures. Occasionally, i'll glance at the screen or the book, but predominately my attention is focused on my notebook. Overall, this helps me remember everything Tim or Peter says.

I don't watch the videos. I read the chapters myself. Read a chapter once, read it again. When you read, actually try to understand it. For this, you must focus well. Try meditating or yoga. Read a chapter 2-3 times, then work on the questions. For each question, understand why the rest of the options are wrong. Do this for each chapter. You'll be slow at first, but you'll pick up speed in a few months time.

    IT TAKES TIME TO IMPROVE

Like GreenMonkey said if you don't want to watch the video I would use the Ebook to get the highlighting and the notes. I know that a lot on these forums aren't big for highlighting but I find that the Becker highlights and notes help me in my review stage. The highlights help me see where I should focus in on and eliminate the need for reading or learning minor or unimportant material

Lol, maybe I work too hard or maybe it is reflective of my struggle with English, who knows

I've watched every single lecture twice. First time just listened and highlighted book and went on to do MCQs.

Second time during the final review when all the chapters were already viewed and textbook had been read, and MCQ/sims were taken.

And for AUD, I listened 3 times several chapters on audit risk and types of reports.
