Variances and Becker

Is it just me or does Becker over complicate the teaching of variances? I don’t at all understand the A BA BS A mnemonic. When I get a variance question I can figure it out on my own based on common sense maybe about 70% of the time (sometimes I find the wrong type of variance than what they’re looking for) but I’m trying to learn this stuff backwards because I hear it’s quite important.

I’m just having difficulty with the way Becker teaches it. Any advice?

    Video is pretty helpful, thanks!

I have a difficult time with mnemonics and the outlines of how it all works. I like to think problems through logically. If I know what an efficiency variance IS instead of just how to calculate it (which Roger did a nice job of explaining), that's the most helpful to me.

Since I posted this I went through about 40 or so questions and got a 77%, not bad for a second time through, I think I'm getting it for the most part. I have the most trouble when I have to work backwards through them. (which thankfully there aren't many practice questions like that)

Is there anything else out there that will make these variance analysis little easier to understand? I have watched the Becker lecture slides on the variance over and over and watched that youtube video from the above post couple of times. This stuff does not want to click in my head. I understand half of the variance, but still not enough to do all the questions in B5. The 141 questions are kicking my A$$!

    Any help guys?

I agree… Becker did over complicate variances but the ABA BSA mnemonic stuck in my head the second Olinto said it in the lecture

Check the BEC General Discussion thread. There is a really helpful video posted on the previous page. Yes, Becker completely misses the mark on this topic.

    REG - 71, 71, 80
