Becker Question –
Anyone have some tips for studying for BEC? For those that passed, what really helped you? I just started watching lectures on Tuesday and the MCQ take a long time to get through. I’ll hopefully finish the lectures/1st HW go around by Tuesday next week.

Multiple choice, multiple choice, and more multiple choice. I used Becker and also supplemented with Wiley TB. If you are a decent writer, don't waste your time on the WC.

I would also recommend supplementing with Ninja notes or WTB since Becker is kind of slacking on this section. I only used Becker self study and felt like I was slightly unprepared– my actual exam had several things that were never covered in the lectures / homework sets.

September 13, 2013 at 1:58 pm #447258Texas CPAParticipantI felt the same way after the 1st time through the homework for B2 and B3. It seemed to take forever.
Just keep working the MCQ and your speed answering the computational questions will improve. I worked through the homework questions twice and then worked the supplemental questions. I would work 24 questions at a time and had a goal of finishing in 35 minutes or less. Towards the end I was finishing 24 questions in 30 minutes and getting 90%. The homework questions seem to be more computational to drill that practice into your head.
It worked out pretty well because on exam day, I finished the MCQ sections fairly quickly and had 75 minutes to spend on the WC which I needed.
The WC is an easy 15 points but they take time to organize your thoughts and review for grammar. Thank goodness they have a spell check.
I thought Becker did a pretty good job for me on BEC. I only had 2 questons that were completely out of left field and that is not unusual on the exam. One question was straight out of FAR and I have not sat for FAR yet.

September 13, 2013 at 5:15 pm #447262There is tons of stuff to memorize! I found myself writing different facts or equations with a dry eraser on my bathroom mirror, and reading through them all each time I brushed my teeth or went to the bathroom…this really helped me.

Then on final review write out all formulas/processes that you dont have memorized and carry around that notebook everywhere. It will stick. I remember being so overwhelmed cuz there was formulas for cost acctg, economics, financial analysis etc. But once they stick, the exam is a piece of cake.
PS Do not waste any study time on WC, unless you can't write well. But I feel after 150 credits, one can write.

AUD 11/5/13 - 96September 13, 2013 at 5:33 pm #447266AnonymousInactiveBEC was the worst for me due to the sheer volume of random cr*p. I used Becker and my strategy was to give each chapter 1.5 days (read the book and did mcqs- no time for lectures etc.) and then re-read a chapter in 2-3 hours and redo the mcqs I had marked up for the remaining days. I not only marked mcqs I got wrong but also ones I thought I wanted to look at one more time before the exam. And like everyone has already mentioned a gazillion times, read both right and wrong answers.
This strategy worked well for me seeing how I opened a brand new BEC book on August 15th and passed with an 83 on my August 31st exam. Hope that helped. Best of luck. 🙂
