Taking FAR in April – Is Becker enough? - Page 2

I am on the F3 section of Becker and have been using it for a few weeks. So, far I do not feel confident in the material I am learning. I watch the lectures, read the book, make flash cards, then do MCQs and the simulations; however, I am consistently scoring maximum in the 60s on the MCQs. I am considering purchasing the Ten Point Combo to supplement Becker or I might try to apply the NINJA strategy to Becker, but before I do I have a few questions. I realize that everyone learns differently, but I’ll take any advice I can get.

To any one who has used just Becker did you study using the traditional method or the NINJA way? Results?

If I purchased the Ten Point Combo should I apply the NINJA way to Becker or use that traditional and use the NINJA way with the Ten Point Combo materials?

    Thoughts?

    Thank you.

    @SeattleAccountant

After two hours of frustration and going through all the motions, it finally dawned on me to use the middle OR Cost, if the cost was lower than…. But now, thanks to you, I will not ever forget because I will think about the middle finger..lol…

@KCTiger – Umm, I don't know if you are genuinely concerned or if you are being antagonistic. I'll assume the former.

Keely didn't claim you have to master everything in Becker in order to pass… I don't know where you got are getting that.

She said you need to have an “in depth” understanding of “almost” everything. Then she goes on to say, she didn't have that in depth understanding with some topics, because she was having difficulty, and moved on. And she admits is shows in her score (compared to her others). Lastly, she says IF you master everything in Becker, you will be fine. I hope this helps clarify your confusion. If not, what is your concern?

We all agree a pass is a pass is a pass 🙂 If you are doing well on Becker review, from most of what I see around the board, you will do well on test day. Good luck!?

I also have my test on April 1st and I got through 60% of the Becker book so far (i.e. F1-F6).

To be honest, it's not too bad. I have done multiple progress tests for all of these 6 chapters and I have been doing quite well. You'll be surprised at how much you remember and how some things make so much more sense as you progress through the chapters.

Sure, there are times where I get frustrated and annoyed at some of the material. For instance, last night I was doing a progress test and got stuck with intercompany transactions and capitalized interest. So, I wrote that down and went back to the homework problems/SIMS that covered these. I made sure to understand how to work the problem – I basically looked at the solution and made sure I knew where everything was coming from.

I honestly think flash cards are intimidating with the CPA exam. I used to do it in college all the time, but for some reason, I don't see them being effective here.

I plan on beginning F7 on Monday morning on a fresh mind. Just keep at something and you will eventually understand it. That's my motto, at least!

@cpawax – You're not behind at all! Just go at whatever pace is comfortable for you.

It seems that the general consensus on this forum is to leave 2-3 weeks for final review. As long as you have that, you should be fine!

@MCJKT – I wasn't trying to be antagonistic. I don't know why you think I would come on to a public forum to start an argument, but I guess I can see where you got that. I must have misread her original post, in which case I do apologize. I make mistakes too (clearly). I was just trying to get a good handle of how we can gauge our readiness for this test (especially for FAR since there is a mountain of info to remember). I guess I was just a little on edge since I take the test in a couple of days! I haven't reached full on freak out mode yet, but the day isn't over either.

I didn't skip any sections. I read the book cover to cover at least six or seven times. However, I knew there were some topics I just didn't have a really good grasp on and I never learned them as well as I should. For example, there is something in F3 about eliminating gross profit when selling inventory between consolidated companies or something. I must've read that section 20 times and I still can't explain to you how to do it. It's just something I never understood and eventually just gave up on.

What I'm saying is, I used Becker, I never skipped anything but I didn't know everything like the back of my hand, and I ended up with a 78. If you use Becker, master all the topics, you should probably end up with a better score than I did. Of course, we will have different tests, but the chances are high that you'll do well if you utilize Becker to its full potential. This is accomplished by reading the book and doing MCQs until you're blue in the face.

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂
