Skipping Becker CPA Review Lectures

What are everyone’s thoughts on skipping the Becker CPA Review lectures and learning from the E-book. I spend so much time highlighting and underlining that I feel I’m not really listening to what Gearty is saying.

I think Becker tries to add value with the lectures….I think not everything is in the textbook on purpose, forcing people to pay for the program. I don’t feel Tim Gearty is an educator at all, whereas Peter actually teaches at a university in NYC. Basically, you have to decide if watching 3.5 hour of lectures is worth 10 tidbits of information- a sad ratio in my opinion.

Becker is a brutal amount of work for FAR, but then again, every now and then when I try to think of an answer, I can hear Tim’s voice and explanation in my head.

I really home someone from Becker looks at these blogs and considers dumping Tim for everything but REG ( he has a law degree). For the price, they need to get better instructors.

@nessie I just took FAR I couldn't agree more. I'm studying for AUD now and a lot of this is just memorization. The lecturers helped for the calculations for me but thats about it.

Video lectures are a waste of time unless you are having trouble understand a topic. I learned after two chapters that it was of no value to me and a waste of time.

Just depends on the type of learner that you are. I actually found the lectures to help me memorize key facts easier, because I could specifically remembering highlighting it etc. If after a few hours of watching them you dont feel they are adding value skip them.

@collegecpa, Oh my, how are you finding Tim Gearty for AUD? I could hear him burp, slurp and his cell phone ring during the lectures. The other guy is way better, and I had to buy the final review for AUD because Tim just read from the book and I knew nothing after 6 chapters.

I have an issue with just using the annotated e-book. Becker is expensive because its supposed to include lectures. I mean everyone who pays for Becker is subsidizing the “in-class” version which is NYC can’t be cheap. If a person is just going to use the e-book, go with another provider.

Just saying you have to listen to 3.5 hours of lectures, just to get a few more tidbits of info that are not in the ebook. They do provide examples that are not in the ebook, so this means you need a lot of time to do Becker. I just graduated and I had professors who were far better at teaching concepts than most of the Becker instructors.

I have not watched even 1 minute of the lectures. Look at my scores in my signature, doesn't seem to have hurt at all.

I am going to start studying in August. I think I will try the lectures with Becker at first and see if I get anything from them. If I do then great, if not I will go with just using the ebook notes. I am also going to supplement with Ninja Notes and maybe Ninja MCQ for a final review.

@bfulcher how do you “do them properly” I find they move much too quickly for me to get anything out of them.

I like to have things explained to me, so I almost always opt to do the lecture and take notes simultaneously. However, I know people who can pick up notes they wrote months ago and understand everything again, I could never do that! I agree with Jessica that it depends on your learning style.

The Becker System works for a reason. Probably a good idea just to follow it. Shortcuts won't help you at all.

^^^^ Couldn't disagree any more. When I “followed the system” I failed twice. I started passing when I made modifications and adjustments that work for me.
