Should I go for Becker or Self-Study?

    Hi folks,

I have been reading all your comments for quite a while. The next Becker classes will be starting this January, and you know its expensive. I graduated college with Accounting concentration, and I can say that I’m above average in this field. However, I’m still not confident that just by self-studying I will pass the exams. Do you think that the Becker review will prepare me well for the April/May 2013 exam? Or, should I just use the Wiley review (2012 or 2013) and test bank in order to prepare myself?

I've been using Becker self-study and it has worked out well for me so far. I used the 2011 edition for FAR and BEC, and used/am still using 2012 for AUD and REG.

I think it really comes down to personal discipline and how you feel about your study habits. If you know that you'll be able to come up with a reasonable schedule, to force yourself to adhere to that schedule, and to put in the (enormous amount of) time required to pass the exams on your own, without a class to keep you on track, then self-study should be sufficient.

If you know that you need someone else to structure your studying for you, and you need other people to keep you responsible, classes could be better. I think it's all about the time and effort that you put into the process, regardless of the specific route you choose.

As far as the information contained in the self-study, everything you need should be in there. With Becker specifically, you can't really take too many shortcuts, pretty much everything in the book is important. Do MCQs until they make you sick :).

    FAR - 81 (07/24/2012)
    BEC - 92 (10/06/2012)
    AUD - 92 (11/29/2012)
    REG - 88 (02/28/2013)

    Ethics - 90
