It’s been a long journey, but….I’m onto my last exam…REG! I am not a tax accountant (worked in big four as an auditor) so this is definitely not my forte. What did y’all do for REG exam prep? I’m using Becker. Is there anything unique with your studying process for REG compared to the other exams? How much time would you allot to REG?

I feel that the lectures in Becker emphasize the most important points in each chapter which give you the foundation of the chapter which makes up about 65-70% of the material. The “easy” questions on the CPA exam cover this portion. However as you do well, the test gets progressively harder and the the exam adapts and give you questions that are over material not emphasized in the lectures. My advice to you is to not rewatch the lecture because that takes way too long and you probably already understand the basics in every chapter. You should REREAD the book, multiple times and do the homework multiple choice as many times as possible until you score 90% on every section. It is okay to memorize the answers as long as you know why that answer is correct and why the other 3 answers are wrong. DO NOT rely on “test taking” skills to get the question right. For an example: you notice 3 of the answers are in the same category and the 4th answer is different so you choose the 4th answer.

Also, I think Becker did a bad job covering S Corps. It's too short for such an important topic. Also, do not underestimate the importance of B-LAW. Know how to navigate through the Authoritative Literature tabs. The answers to the sims, or how to solve the sims are VERY often in there word for word.

I used Becker to study for REG and was not feeling confident in my preparation a week before my exam. I purchased the NINJA MCQs and found them to be a great way to see REG questions in a different light. I definitely recommend supplementing your test bank if you're unsure on this one, I know it helped me enormously.

I think I spent an additional 40 hours studying REG after watching all of the lectures for a total of around 70 hours.

If you watch the lectures and take thorough notes (pause the lecture if you need to), then do all of the homework, you should be all set.

Hi all! Do you think I can use Becker 2013 to prepare for Reg?? Is it too outdated?? The annual changes in dollar amounts and thresholds(exemptions, deductions, phaseouts….) are rarely, if ever, tested on the exams. Business law hasn't changed much to best of my knowledge. Can I just use it along with the updates provided on Becker's site? Thanks!

You can definitely pass using the 2013 materials.
