Hey, I am studying using Becker self study and I have a question for some experienced users. Do you think it is better to do one lecture and then do the multi-choice for that section or do you think going through all lectures then doing the multi-choice is the better way to go. Looking for the most effective and efficient way to memorize the material. Currently studying for BEC btw. Thanks

i would do part of the lecture then do the corresponding part of the MCQ and break it down like that

doing all the video lectures then all the mcq i feel would be counter productive but its up to you, find your groove

at least for FAR thats how i did it, first exam first part so i don't really know. i don't have any experience with exam and what not

I don't understand how anyone can learn the material from lectures. In my opinion.. the exam is all answering questions… so hearing a guy talk isnt going to help much.

Read, do MCQs, repeat.

For me, it depends how much the subject matter differs between chapter sections + the level of difficulty. For FAR, I did a section and then MCQs. For AUD, I did the entire lecture usually and the all the MCQs.

I agree with jstay! I am also using Becker Self Study. What works for me is watching a lecture/jotting down notes and then attempting the corresponding questions. In the beginning I tried to watch the entire chapter lecture and then work on the questions…I became easily overwhelmed. I think my MCQ score improved by breaking up the lectures/MCQ into smaller chunks. Best of luck!

I think the method you choose depends on how you learn best. For me I read the book (I'm doing Becker self study too) and take notes as I go. I then listen to each section of the lecture and do the coorsponding MCQ. This is how I did all of my master'd course so hopefully this will lead to success on the CPA exam too. I use the lectures to put the info in my brain one more way and because the lectures seem to help my tie the concepts together. I then do a ton of MCQ reveiw questions.

I agree with ShelahV, it depends on the way you learn.

For me, I read the chapter first, then watched/listened to the lectures, and did the MCQs + sims.

The lectures were just to reinforced areas where I may not have understand completely or to help emphasize which parts of the chapter are more likely to show up on the exam.

Former for me. If I have to wait 3-4 days to do homework over a certain subject, chances are I'm going to forget everything I learned 3-4 days ago.

James, i remember seeing somewhere saying you re-wrote all the highlighted things in the becker book?

I'm taking it the 31st, already gone through the material once but i think I'm going to do that, you recommend?

It's probably not a bad idea. I usually only type stuff out when I'm going through the material the first time. It slows down the pace and makes you think about what you're typing. If you have the time, re-writing the notes in your own words seems like it helps a lot of people, too.

Usually for review I just do a ton of MCQs and re-reading over weak areas. If you have some weak areas where you don't quite understand everything, writing stuff out should help a lot.

This has been my process:

–Watch entire session (underlining and highlighting along the way)

–Next day or two, read individual section (which was highlighted and underlined previously), perform multiple choice for that section, repeat until all sections of chapter/session are done.

@moby i have the same technique except after i'm through all the chapters I go back and re-do all the MCQ's I got wrong or had marked during my first pass-through. It's kind of like a refresher for me because I tend to forget everything from chapter 1 by the time i'm done with chapter 6. Then I do 100 question progress tests until i'm blue in the face. <– just about blue in the face now since my test is tomorrow.
