Passing 2011 REG with Becker only?

I’ve heard anecdotes from friends that just took REG this year that Becker really fell short in preparing them for the exam (lots of questions on the exam that weren’t covered in Becker). This has me concerned because I’m a few days away from sitting and have only used Becker.

I wanted to get other perspectives online.

How have people on here fared taking REG (IN 2011!) that only used Becker? Did you pass? If not, do you think it was Becker’s fault? Or a lack of studying / review?

EDIT: If it matters, I think I have a pretty decent handle on the Becker material (just re-did 100% of the Becker MCQs for Chapters 1 – 3 and got 87% (456/524) correct — going to do chapters 4-7 this week). But I guess if it’s the wrong material, even 100% might not be good enough! 🙁

Becker's do not prepared enough for the section 1031, 1245, 1250 etc…; neither mark clearly the difference between corp and partnership rules…

Wiley is awesome (Phil) explaining those concepts while Becker's is very good for business law. I couldn't pass without Wiley.. third time lucky charm!!

@jmd494 I used Becker 2011 for Reg in Feb-11. I would say as far as MCQ's I found Becker to be adequate, but make sure you are comfortable with ALL the Ancillary Materials as it is really all fair game. Just also remember that each exam is different so it very hard to gauge what I may find difficult versus what you difficult or even what topics may be heavily tested. I just think if you are comfortable with all the Becker materials then you should be fine with the MCQ's . The issue really is the SIMS , they can be tricky , but the key is really to leave yourself enough time to go through them. My own experience I had 2 tabs in my SIMS that were not covered by Becker and I left them for last and used the research option to learn the topic and attempt the questions.

Allocate your time carefully , go through the MCQ's quickly and accurately ( which means you have to be comfortable with the material ) and make sure you leave enough time for the SIMs. The research question can also take some time to find so again leave enough time for the SIMS. But most of all just make sure you know the material and manage your time and do not panic if you see an odd ball SIM , just give it your best shot and you should be fine. Good luck

I only prepared using Becker. Got a 71 in February and an 84 at the end of May. So, it's doable.

Thanks for the responses. I was definitely planning on NOT reading the ancillary material but I'll just have to push through it.

Side note: I HATE that ancillary materials crap…for the money we spend on Becker, they could prepare a brief lecture for the CDs

Also make sure you have all the updates for REG. There are a lot – some minor but some fairly significant ones over material to be tested as of 7/1. Definitely need to know the ancillary material as well as the rest of the text. I had several questions on these topics

    FAR 4/1/11 - 89
    AUD 4/15/11 - 85
    REG 4/29/11 - 80
    BEC 5/13/11 - 85

i used becker only and took the exam may 9th and passed with an 80. it is definitely doable as i wasnt stumped on any sims and only on a few of the mcq's. definitely go over the ancillary material and pound out those mcqs.

    BEC - 80 11/1/10
    AUD - 74 on 11/30/11. retake 87 1/18/12
    FAR - 79 8/8/11
    REG - 80- 5/9/11

you can find some you tube videos for the ancillary materials in REG. I think they might be on their website too. (for becker)

    ILLINOIS CANDIDATE
    FAR - Passed
    BEC - Passed
    AUD - Passed

Thanks, everyone. I saw a lot of updates on the Becker site (thanks…I had no idea these existed!). I watched the YouTube vids they linked to which were extremely helpful.

But a lot of the changes they provided were new tax thresholds from new legislation. I hope they don't test the brand new numbers too hard because I certainly don't have the time to cram all that info!
