OT – Is Becker a bit sexist?

    I observed something a little strange in Becker Regulation… As I am plugging along doing my lectures, I noticed that they always use “he” and “him” when describing partners, owners, ect… I didn’t necessarily think much of it until they referred to a Manager as a “she”. This manager was in the subordinate position. Then they did it again, but this time the “she” was a defendant in fraud! I laughed out loud a bit at this. I wonder if the writer’s found a little humor in this…

    While I have something to say about this, as a male I think any comment I make on this topic will automatically be construed as sexist. So I'll be quiet now….

    I think I came across about this a bit wrong… I am not offended by their use of pronouns, just surprised that they weren't consistent… Just sharing an observation.

    As a caveat, Tim says at the beginning of Regulation don't take anything they say in regards to examples as being offensive. They are just examples.

    Here's something to ponder though, next time you say “you guys” look at the gender of all of the people you are referring to. I'm willing to bet that there is at least 1 female in the group. Why not say “folks” or “you all”? “Well that seems kind of silly, I'm just saying ‘you guys' ” might be your response. For the people who are female, how would you like to be called “guy”?

    Just some food for thought. Happy studying everyone!

    That is why in the south we say ‘Yall'. Saying ‘You Guys' is sexist….not really it is just yankee and we are lazy. We love smooshing words together.

    @OP

    There is an example where the lady is a doctor and pays for her deadbeat boyfriend…at least in that example we may be suckers but at least we are well-off suckers πŸ™‚ haha

    I'm from the North Carolina (Go Heels!!!). Let me get this straight, saying “You guys” to a group of male and female people isn't sexist?

    I am a female from Texas originally but have lived in Atlanta and Boston. I say “you guys”. Used to say “y'all” a few years ago but I don't anymore because I'm a New Englander now and don't like that word.

    What if generics ended in ‘white' instead of “man/guys”? Freshwhite, chairwhite, whitekind, and ‘hey you whiteys!' Would people of color like being called ‘one of the whites' (one of the guys)? I don't think so.

    The term “guys” makes women invisible by lumping them in with men.
