Coming into studying for the CPA, I heard Becker was the best and although it was a little costly, it was well worth it. But coming from my own experience, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Definitely Becker is useful and I like the format of it and all but it just never seems up to date. Even now, they are still using 7.5% for medical expense instead of the new 10%. If I hadn’t been on here, I wouldn’t have caught that and would probably miss points on the exam.

The 2013 Becker books came out in late 2012, so any tax changes made in Jan 2013 couldn't be reflected. They do have documents on their website listing any changes/updates.

Becker, Wiley Test Bank, and Ninja 10 Point Combo!

    FAR: 89
    REG: 87
    AUD: 92
    BEC: 75
    Ethics: 90

I personally didn't like Becker but as someone mentioned it depends from person to person. I do think they are a good course but way too expensive and to be honest I didn't feel the motivation to study with them.

I found Rogers and loved his teaching method. With him you have to write your own notes as well and his videos have a good amount of motivation and humour. So when you are doing AUD which can be sooooo boring. It helps to have this over excited pumped up guy teaching you Auditing. At least for me it helped me get through the videos, the material and I felt much better doing the questions too. I was able to make my own notes and just keep practicing.

    FAR 05/27/14; 786/110 - Done !

Ntw6817, I didn't think Becker lectures were that great, either, because they didn't explain the concepts to you, they just told you to highlight and underline. But the questions are very useful, so do those as many times as you can! Like insiyah24 I also recommend Roger. He spends more time in the lectures talking about the concepts and helping you to understand it as opposed to telling you what to circle.

So far Becker has been a good “review” course – Just trust your review package. No worries as long as you master the core concepts. if you need to “learn” a topic, then an college accounting book would do a better job. Becker gives you just the necessary information needed for the test. I just passed REG in August 2013 using Becker 2012 which had 2011 numbers. keep going – it will all come together.

Becker posts updates on their website: https://beckerkb.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/927/~/2012-edition-course-updates

Becker did a great job preparing me for FAR and REG, but I was not so crazy about it for BEC. Lots of topics on my BEC exam were not covered in Becker, but that seems to be a common complaint for any study materials. After I failed Audit with a 69, I bought the Ninja 10 Point and bumped my score up to 76. In my opinion, Becker pushes memorization, especially when they say in the videos, “just remember this mnemonic and that's all you need on exam day!” Not true, especially on a tricky exam like Audit. As other posters said above, if you take your own notes instead of just highlighting as you watch videos, you will actually learn the material instead of memorizing it.

The other thing about Becker is that you have to dive in and follow the entire study plan (and after paying so much, I had no problem doing that). Watch the super cheesy videos, study the chapters, do all of the questions, take the practice tests, study the flashcards, then move on to the next section. It seems like some people try to do one tiny part, but I don't think the set was designed to do that. Also, if I didn't understand a topic, I pulled out my old accounting books or Googled it.

Bottom line: Becker does a good job preparing for the exams, but you have to follow their structured study plan.

I really like Becker, their structured study plan makes things easy and takes the pressure of running out of time away. I wish they taught college classes like this in terms of approach I would have learned so much more . Its so direct and to the point and clear on what you absolutely need to know.

    Officially done.

I HATED Becker. The “highlight this, circle this, underline this” didn't work for me AT ALL!!!! I was spending so much time focusing on what to highlight and circle that I wasn't actually learning the material.

CPAExcel + NINJA 10-point Combo was much better for me!
