Is Becker CPA Review really THAT phenomenal? - Page 2

It just seems no matter who I talk to or what I read, so many people seem to swear by Becker CPA Review. I simply can not afford the $3400+ for Becker and I am looking at getting Wiley CPAexcel which after discounts/promo codes I can get for about $1150 or so. Am I going to regret purchasing Wiley down the road and wishing I had just spent the money on Becker?

I’ve never really been “great” at accounting as a whole, have mainly pushed a B in most all of my theory classes, with all of my Intermediate 1&2 and Advanced courses being very difficult for me and struggling to get a C. This has made me very worrisome about the FAR section of the exam and I am just really wanting something really thorough and explanatory to help me out. Right now I have a Gleim Financial Accounting ‘Exam Questions and Explanations’ book for FAR that I purchased to help me out with my Government course, and I try to work through the MCQs and am just having a very hard time. I am graduating in December and I plan to purchase the materials not too long after graduation and shooting for a February test date for FAR. I plan to be working part-time but do not want anything full-time right now so I can focus on studying.

Knowing my background, will CPAexcel be a good choice, or is it for more advanced and familiar users compared to Becker?

I've used Yaeger thus far and have been pretty pleased with them.

If you're worried about paying so much for Becker, maybe look at one of the other programs (Yaeger, Rogers, Gleim, CPAExcel, etc.) and supplement those with NINJA products. It would be cheaper on the whole and you'd be exposed to different teaching techniques and angles. Personally, with my AUD retake, I used some of Jeff's free AUD materials which really helped shore up an area or two that kept confusing me with Yaeger. Sometimes you just need a fresh perspective on a topic to really “get it.”

i found Becker to be the most commonly used amongst the people i knew that passed the exam….. before i found A71

    FAR - 1/26/2012 - PASSED (78, but Lost credit), re-do 11/27/2013 - PASSED (87)!
    AUD - EPIC FAIL, 71, 69; 68; 5/25/2013 - PASSED (85)!
    REG - 10/1/2012 - 72; 7/1/2013 - 73 UGH, 10/1/2013 - PASSED (85)!
    BEC - 2/28/2013 - PASSED (82)!
    Licensed CPA!

Used Becker self-study materials (just this for FAR original & REG #1), WileyTestBank, NINJA notes/audio, and Roger cram course for AUD #5, REG #3 & FAR reboot. CPA!

After much research, I am torn between CPAexcel and Roger.

On one hand Roger seems great because sometimes I find myself having a very short attention span and I watched some of his preview videos and he seemed to keep me very interested and has great methods for memorizing certain things that can sometimes be a bit tricky, but the downfall is that there he has no mobile app, he has no MCQs outside of the Wiley ones (which brings me to my next question, if the Wiley test bank is basically included with Roger, why would I be forced to pay $59.99 for each section in the app store for the test bank?)

I got the 14 day trial of CPAexcel and I have watched a few of the lecture videos and just find them very tedious and all too reminiscent of some of my horrible accounting teachers from undergrad that made many people HATE accounting.

I know I can get the Ninja flash cards on my phone through Brainscape, but is there any other test banks or study options for my iPhone that anyone can recommend that aren't excessively expensive and highly useful for when I'm out and about?

    Hi Jeff,

May I ask which review course(s) did you personally use to pass the exams? I tried searching in your introduction but could not find where you mentioned it.

    Thanks

@cpa066729 – I was in a Bhutanese prison, where I was offered to train in the arts of stealth and fear as a member of the League of Shadows, led by Ra's al Ghul. After completing this training, CPA certificate in hand, I now train future CPAs to meet the minimum requirements to protect the public interest from wayward accounting practices and less-than-transparent reporting.
