Has anyone had a lot of difficulty using Becker self-study in preparing for REG? After taking to some people it seems Becker does not prepare you well for the SIMs and the actual test often tests you on material becker doesn’t cover.

If anyone has had a good experience with Becker for REG that would be good to hear!!

I did Becker Self Study for all portions except FAR which I did Live. I felt Becker prepared me well for each section but I followed the syllabus and didn't take any shortcuts. I did 100% of the MCQ and 100% of the Sims. I worked each MCQ section at least two times and in some cases many more. I also supplemented with NINJA MCQ and worked those questions hard as well.

I felt Becker laid a good foundation for REG's MCQ. There really wasn't anything out of left field for me on exam day. It was the usual mix of tax, business law and ethics. Working Becker and reinforcing with NINJA I felt prepared.

As for the Sims, nobody does a good job of preparing you for REG Sims. I'm not trying to scare you but REG Sims are, without a doubt, the hardest Sims on any of the four exams. You can practice a hundred different Sims from Becker, NINJA and other review material and still not be ready for them on exam day. So instead of just blindly practicing Sims which aren't likely to show up on exam day anyway it's best to understand concepts behind Tax Law. Really understanding a topic such as Like / Kind Exchanges or AMT will do more to prepare you for REG Sims than just working random problems. Finally, Becker's Authoritative Literature is done really well and closely mirrors the exam's AL. So spend a lot of time using it in while you practice and review. Understanding where key topics are in the AL will help you out quite a bit on exam day. Get familiar with the layout and how to do proper searches and you'll be in better shape for the Sims than a lot of people.

I used Becker self study for Reg and I thought it prepared me well for the exam for both the MCQ's and the SIMs.

AngelWatch is absolutely correct. The SIMS for REG are the only truly difficult SIMS on any of the four exams. I work in tax and they still were moderately difficult for me. My recommendation is to work MCQ's through Becker and Ninja until you never want to look at a computer screen again. Go over basis and computation of gains and losses again and again. REG is a tough exam no doubt, but Becker gives you enough to pass. If it didn't people wouldn't shell out almost four grand to buy it.
