    Becker Question –

    Hello A71 Community:

For the life of me I cannot learn from the lectures! I have tried and tried to make sense of what Tim and company are trying to convey, but I become more confused in regard to the concepts being presented. Although, Peter Olinto is the most entertaining of all.

All that said, I am opting on skipping the lectures and just view the ebook, “highlight this and that” and physically write the notes on the actual book. Plus, I dislike being treated like an elementary student when they read to me or tell me to highlight this and that. C’mon this was 3k+ of cash outflow!!

What would you opine! Thank you in advance!

I'm with you actually. I'm on my first section (AUD) and almost done with the lectures so I'm going to finish them out but they aren't very helpful. Some of the notes they add seem to be included in the questions a lot which has me wondering why it isn't in the text to begin with, but it might be easier just to scroll through the eBook which has the notes already and copy them.

I was hoping for more examples over the concepts too

    Then don't watch them-seriously.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I read each section at a time and then I watch the video from Becker. Lets say Accounting for nonmonetary exchanges has 7 pages. I would first read the 7 pages, then watch the lecture, and finally do the MC questions for that section.

In all seriousness I found the Becker lectures helpful for the computational and complex areas of FAR, but less helpful than careful reading for the parts that are relatively strait forward. I have decided that from here on out that I will not be using lectures until I have a wtf moment and cannot figure something out. For example with the first two chapters of audit I have not had to watch the lectures to understand the material. Instead I will use that time to do careful slow thoughtful reading.

People learn differently. Auditory learners should spend more time with lectures. Visual learners should spend more time reading. Kinesthetic learners should be focused on note taking, multiple choice questions, and even do simulations(blasphemy). If you are not an auditory learner than you should probably not even bother wasting your time with the videos.

While I think the majority of people will find benefits using all approaches there are some that will get diminishing returns when they focus on the wrong learning style. I have decided that I will save the most time skipping the lectures and using a READ and then DO approach.

Do not feel obligated to use every resource that your CPA review course provides.

The problem is that I have a lot of WTF moments; I finished College like 8 years ago. But at the same time, I’m a visual learner, so I had to read the chapter first.

Monk, didnt we start studying FAR around the same time? And now you are working on Audit, damn Im slow.

I didn't watch videos for three of my exams, so skip them if you feel you aren't getting anything out of them. Just think of it as a sunk cost, yeah you paid for them, but if they don't work for you, you won't squeeze value out of them by wasting time watching them.

I however did find value in the vids to get me over the hump on a section.

So, read and do the MCQs, take the exam, pass, great, if you don't pass, maybe take a look at the lectures as a supplement.

Far as telling you to highlight, write notes in the book, etc, they have a system that works pretty well for a lot of people, its a process meant to stick key areas in your head and/or keep your attention.

@CR7 I am not working so don't feel bad. If your not working to than you got to get your shit together lol. I think a lot of people would say I am taking to much time considering this is all I do. However I did take a two week vacation away from staying at home all day and didn't study one bit. When is your FAR exam?

Monk, judging by the time you spend on here, I'd say you may have not enough time to study 😉

    REG: 83 (August 2013)
