Can I update my Becker books and lectures for free?

I was under the impression, after blowing over $3,000, that I could easily update my books and lectures when I purchased Becker. I just called, asking for updates books/dvds for Audit and BEC, and was told I could not do this… is this a joke? I am at work, so I didn’t want to spend too much time on the phone, but I plan on calling back and talking to a supervisor until I get a better explaination…

Anyone have any experience with this…. will they really refuse to send me new books/lectures? FYI my Becker license still has a year left on it before it expires.

my understanding is no, even with the guarantee they have that if you don't pass the tests during before your expiration date you still have to purchase the materials, only the classes are free. You can get updates online and print them out though but the lectures you won't get anything new.

Thanks for the response… what a waste of money… does the test bank/practice exam at least get updated?

Nope. Voila, it all vanishes after your expiration, except the things you can keep – like your books. The software expires too.

I still kick myself for going with Becker

    B 71 - 79 EXPIRED
    A 69 - 75 EXPIRED
    R 65 - 48 - 45
    F 56 - 61 - 65 - 64

Still need 30 more credits, in basket weaving (gotta love new CA requirements)

I understsand that the software will expire.. but I still have a year left. What can I update? The test bank? The lectures? The practice exam? Or am I stuck with outdated materials?

The only thing that you can update is the book by downloading the updates online and printing them. All the rest stays the same unless you buy new materials, and like Hustlin said, once it expires it all goes away other than the book. I do not regret getting Becker as it really explained things for me in a way I understand and I still remember the mnemonics but I wish I had done some more research beforehand as I would probably have gone with something different only for the fact is there are some other good review courses out there that are less money.

Run the software update through the Academic Support online. It will update questions (remove and add) in the software. I had to do this when I found that SFAC 8 replaced SFAC 1 and 2 in F1 – T1. I noticed that it updated the homework questions so make sure you do it!

Forgot to mention, the software update doesn't update the lectures or the simulations. Hope that helps!

When I updated my 2010 to 2011 I paid a small fee and received all new materials. I don't know if they changed things but I would call back and ask. I do remember it wasn't a lot that I paiid but can't remember exact amount

…it's my understanding that once your materials expire, you have to repurchase the software and the new materials again. I think for all 4 parts its around $600 (but that's only if you followed the “Becker Promise”). Otherwise, you end up paying the full price (less a “continuing student discount” which is only a couple hundred bucks). I would recommend using wiley instead.

Ok, I found the email receipt. Mine was not expired, I ordered the updated materials for 3 of the 4 courses and paid $60 total, 20 for the new DVDs, 20 for each course for the book and DVD, and zero cost for the flash cards. There may have been a short time frame at end of year only when it was allowed but I can't remember, it's been over a year now.

Guess I will call back… thanks BNR! I still have almost a year before my license or whatever you call it expires, so unless they changed their policy, then hopefully they will send me the new AUD/BEC dvd and books too for a small fee.

Let us know the update rafferty85.

But from what I know, Becker did that one time exception for 2010 (bnrhilton mentioned) update because Becker did a substantial IFRS update on their material. But for 2011 users, we don't qualify for such update deal. It really sucks that their free tuition guarantee is not free at all. Sort of misleading.

So I called again, this time I got to talk to a competent sales rep, and she told me that I did not have the option of receiving the materials without “buying the course again.” I was going to ask if there was a discounted price since I was already enrolled in 2011 but she assured me that nothing significant has changed to warrent getting the 2012 books/dvds.
