Becker vs. Roger

Hi Guys! i’m finding out my score next week for FAR and if it is a fail which i think it will be, i dont want to use the same material again (Yaeger).

i was checking out Roger, the plus side of him is that he seems energetic and hyper and i think maybe this will help me stay focused. also he uses wiley books and test bank which i already have from when i purchased yaeger.

on the other hand, i have been told that Becker is the best (there is a reason why large cpa firms have their canidates use becker when studying for the exam)…. i also happend to like the book a lot more then Wiley (i borowed a 2009 from a friend). i feel Wiley has too much material in it that is not necessary to know in order to pass and Becker simplify their information on their book and go straight to the point. However, I know nothing about their lectures comparing it to Yaeger & Roger.

Anyway, there is a drastig price difference between Becker & Roger but at this point i dont really care if have to spend on another study review course as long as it works.

whoever have used either Roger or Becker, please tell me your expierience. i’m planning on buying somthing next week.

I'm a Roger fan and his lectures are extremely useful and informative, but as a personal advice I would still recommend that you wait till you find out your score. It's possible that you passed the exam or failed with a reasonable margin (i.e. 74). If this isn't the case and you feel that you can't continue with your current course even though you tried your best, then trying a different course might be a good idea.

I do agree with you that Wiley's book might be extremely detailed. Roger has his own book, you can think of it as a highly condensed version of Wiley book that is easier to read and to understand without the unnecessary details. I haven't tried Becker but the cost is indeed high especially if you believe that you already know the materials. If you are shopping for courses, you might like to try CPAExcel as well since it might suite your studying style (Roger can be difficult to use if you need a highly systematic studying schedule).

Personally, I am upset with myself for choosing Becker over CPAexcel. Main reason: cost. Secondary reason: shitty lectures.

If you think sitting there for four hours listening to Tim or Pete say “Highlight this, underline this, circle this” will help, then by all means go with Becker. In my opinion, all study materials are EXACTLY the same. The people who pass typically are those that were more dedicated in their study habits AND got lucky come exam day.

I also agree that Wiley book give you a lot of information and details. I think if I were to read the whole Wiley Book it'd take me at least 30%-50% more time than studying Becker. I used Wiley book's for the MCQs and SIMs and studied using Becker book. I will see how good my strategy is once I get my AUD score next week or so… I hope I don't have to study the same thing again…..

I agree with LongJourney-if you missed FAR by a few points, you may want to just save some $$ and stick with Yaeger. You could have just as well failed with Becker or Roger the first time.

I debated between Becker, Yaegar and Roger and finally settled on Roger and I REALLY like him.

I'm waiting on my Audit score but if I fail, it's because I didn't leave myself enough time to study not because of the course. The course was fine in my opinion. Oh and the numerous simple little tips that I've gotten from this forum have made a huge difference too!

I'd suggest watching Jeff's demo for Roger though. Some people swear by him…some can't stand him. It's all about personal preference. I need humor though and he makes it interesting and explains concepts in funny situations so you get it. Afterall, accounting is booorrinngg after 5 minutes. 🙂

By the way LongJourney-you passed all 4 parts in 10 days? What planet do you hail from?! What's your story??

Thank you cosmo_sippin_cpa for your remarks. I'm from planet Earth (although not from USA) but I had some advantages (left my job few months back so plenty of free time, had a strong self-motivating factor, extremely fast reader, strong accounting background, and currently single). I spent around two months studying for all four parts of the exam (end of November to end of January), eliminating my social life in the process. I wanted to finish from the CPA issue as soon as possible in order to improve my career. Luckily for me, Roger course worked really well with me. I wouldn't recommend this approach for anyone though and I don't encourage anyone to imitate me.

@Longjourney: You are my hero. I have hard time passing a section with studying for two months. I wish I had your discipline. I'll be thinking of your achievement every time I feel like “this is hard…”

Good Job!!! And thanks for inspiring me:!)
