I’m looking for a review course starting Jan 2012 and always assumed I would just go with Becker specfically because they have a live course. I used Becker home study years ago and wasn’t sucessful mainly because I lacked the disipline at the time to stay on schedule at home. Anyway now that I’m older and a little more mature I know I can stick to a schedule doing home study but was just going to opt for the live classes to force me to go. Anyone have experience with the live courses? Do they offer anything different than home study other than having to physically going to a location?

After reading some reviews on here and considering the prices of other reviews I may try something other than Becker.

Also is it possible to go Becker Live courses without signing up if you already had the books and materials from another souce? For example where I work we have access to the Becker books if needed.

Depends on the teacher. Some read straight from the lecture others know their stuff.

The live courses I attend offered nothing more than a place to watch the videos that i would normally watch on my laptop. I did get some extra handout material from them every once in a while but other than the structure of going somewhere I don't recommend it if you can have the discipline to study on your own.

When you go to the class do they check to make sure you are enrolled or something along those lines? Just wondering if I had the books other study materials already if I could go to the live class without paying more to go

i also did becker self study and switched to live course. both were not for me so i ended up switching to yaeger home study but as mentioned, it really does depend on the instructor

couple of my becker instructors were good, others read from the book and used the same examples as peter olinto and tim gearty, even said the same jokes

if you used becker before i believe they have some sort of half price disc for past students

They have a list and have you sign in. You can always call Becker and ask them if you can join the live course, I wouldn't think you would have to pay more.

They do offer a half price discount since I've used them before I'm just not sure I even want to pay that if there is a review course that would work better for me.

I guess just showing up to class with the books from work wouldn't work since I wouldn't be on the class roll sheet. That was just an option I was trying to come up with to save some money.

I did the live classes with Becker 4 years ago when I first considered taking the CPA. I felt like it was a waste of time for me to sit there for 8 hours to have someone read the book to me and tell me to highlight the headings if I was going to go home and read the whole thing myself anyway. So I didn't end up signing up for any of the tests and just ended up putting the whole thing off. But I guess it all depends on your learning style. For me, I need to read the book myself, so going to live classes and listening to the lectures isn't that helpful for me. They tell you that if you go to live classes, you don't need to watch the lectures, so I assume it's the same. The benefit of having a live class would be that you can ask your instructor questions and have them clarify stuff for you.
