December 9, 2011 at 12:27 am #338538kandisjoyParticipantI'm not sure what is with the hostile responses from many people on this thread. I was just telling it like I see it, and I think I'm doing both goodluck2everyone and gottagetmycpa a favor by giving them a reality check. If they never take responsibility for failing their exams and just continue to blame others, they will NEVER pass. I was only trying to give helpful advice.
For anyone who thinks that I have forgotten what it's like to be a CPA candidate and am here just to bully.. you are sorely mistaken. I only passed a few months ago, and I was studying for the exam for over two years. Get over yourself and take advice without getting defensive. And I think someone else mentioned that CPAexcel probably wasn't my first study material. You're right! And although I did switch, never once did I blame any of the prior study guides that I used for my failures. I knew it was because either a) I didn't put the time in, or b) I didn't have my study method down right. I only switched because I realized that I learned better without watching videos. Again, see how I took responsibility there? No, it wasn't Roger's fault. It was mine.
@Swan – they weren't just venting. They were seriously making excuses. They may say that they were just venting now.. but it doesn't take a genius to see the truth.
Examples of goodluck2everyone shirking responsibility and blaming.. well, pretty much everything and everyone:
It's the software: “It is garbage if I was getting 80% of their passmaster questions correct the first time around and managed only a 61 on the actual exam”
“that's what I'm basing my opinion on. And if I was getting 80% of the becker passmaster questions correct the first time and still failed, then there's your proof right there.”
“I did 2000 MCQ, give or take 100. My error was that I didn't supplement Becker at all, thus failing (and concluding that becker is trash)”
“If I'm able to get most of becker's practice questions correct the first time and that doesnt even translate to a decent score, then its not my fault but becker's fault kapish?”
It's the exam timing: “Im never taking a test in the last wave ever again. By then, the curve is so bad you get screwed over”
“conclusion: take it the first 2 weeks of the window for the best curve.”
It's the grading curve: “I dont think the crash had anything to do with it, I just think the curve was really bad.”
I mean come on, how can you read that without getting a little annoyed? How many excuses does one person need to fail because they can't just say “Man, I didn't study the right way. I need to work on that.”

December 9, 2011 at 12:32 am #338539PeanutParticipant@goodluck2everyone, I'm so bummed you failed, I was rooting for you! Some people score really high with Becker… But NOT me.. When I've solely used Becker I score in the 50's on my exams (there's a few I haven't listed 😉 ) while scoring upper 80's on the practice questions. The second I start using Wiley my scores jump. I don't know what it is? I see people only use Becker, and come out of the actual exam scoring very high, on all four parts. I do think the luck of the draw plays a big part! That's why we have to be able to take a question at any angle.. (that's what she said) . So what's the plan of attack now?
@SwanCPA–I think I really like you! haha You're awesome, what you said was well said.

If I say they uploaded the wrong score DO YOU REALLY THINK that I believe that and that I am going to go to the CBA and demand that they give me the correct score. If anyone needs a reality check it is the ones who really believe what I said. Again I can only speak for myself. If we annoy you so much then by all means L-E-A-V-E no need to bash. Reality is you passed the exam– goodbye. there are no need for your comments.

December 9, 2011 at 12:39 am #338541MinimortyParticipant@kandis – you know I 100% agree with you. I just don't get some of these comments from these people. And as soon as I call out anyone on their B.S. I get blasted for beig unsupportive. I guess people are just overly sensitive.
Anyway, hope all is well with you.
December 9, 2011 at 12:42 am #338542MinimortyParticipantBtw – people who have passed the exams have been where you have been and they have gotten over the hump. Show some respect and try to learn something from them. Don't tell everyone who has passed to leave. The people who have passed are a great resource.
December 9, 2011 at 12:45 am #338543kandisjoyParticipant@gottagetmycpa – Ok dude, whatever. You have fun. I really don't give a crap about helping you anymore.
@Mini – I guess they must be overly sensative, and this is coming from a very sensative person! 🙂 I think I'm just going to take a break from this forum… maybe a different crowd will emerge that actually appreciates advice from people who have succeeded in passing the exam (probably the best people to get advice from, if you think about it…) It's good to see you. I'm doing well, hope you are too. You know where to reach me if you want to (I think you can figure out my FB).

December 9, 2011 at 1:03 am #338545LD_CPAMemberBecker is one of the leaders. In my opinion, a big part of the reason for this is that Becker gets all the smart kids who just signed offers at the Big4 firms to use them.
The recent college grads with high GPAs are Big4 hires and are smart kids, and like it or not, this cohort is generally more likely to pass the exam and get it over with the 1st time ( and for some of them this would probably be true even if they used a sh*t review course), which could be a big reason why Becker has such a good pass rate. And keep in mind too that Becker's cost is no obstacle to these folks as the Big4 firms pay for the expensive Becker stuff anyway.
Some of the other review courses (such as Yaeger) target ex-Becker folks and convert them, and these are people who may have had trouble passing (probably with Becker) the first time. these people aren't dumber, but they are often older and probably had other things going on in their lives at the time they attempted the CPA, and Becker just didn't work for their learning style. This group tends to be older folks, and they are much less likely to be studying to be Watts-Sells award winners and more likely just studying to pass the damn thing and get on with it. After all, a Watts-Sells award winner is probably some kid who just graduated college with top honors, was a bigtime leader in Beta Alpha Psi, and hasn't started working full-time at his/her big4 firm of choice yet. So instead of juggling work responsibilities, the Watts-Sells type spends his/her entire summer after finishing college(last summer of freedom) studying the CPA for a living and making it beg for mercy.
Don't get me wrong – Becker is also good for most people, but Becker is very expensive. If you study Becker thoroughly enough then it's more than enough (for most people) to get over that 75 hump.
To the OP, I think you should re-take your CPA section once you're at a point you're getting 95-100% on progress tests.

December 9, 2011 at 1:27 am #338546AnonymousInactive@gottaget–I agree with you. I am scoring 75-90 on all m/c and do them so many times I start to memorize the answers. I got a 71 on Reg today after getting 73 on BEC and 64 on FIN (Fin I was not ready for). I decided that I needed to call time out and re-assess the defense. I brought in WIley M/C this afternoon. I have just spend the last 2 hours doing 20 m/c questions and am getting my butt kicked! I am loving every minute of it too. Wiley is beating me to a bloody pulp, and now I am in the 40's. THAT IS WHERE I SHOULD BE AND IS REFLECTIVE OF MY ABILITY. Becker does not reflect my ability.
And again that is me. I do not take lecture well, I have to jump in and do it, screw up, get my butt kicked, stand up and ask for more and then get it. Bottom line, I feel like I am getting somewhere with Wiley M/C

December 9, 2011 at 1:31 am #338548SwanCPAMemberLD_CPA all very valid comments. I guess being “older” (28) must have played into it. 😉

December 9, 2011 at 1:45 am #338550LD_CPAMemberyeah, im one of older ones – turned 28 and just got my license.
A couple other things:
1) These becker students (often younger) are given bonuses from the big firms for passing in 1 year (yet another incentive they have over us older folks…). The reaction when older folks pass it might be “Congrats but It's about freakin' time!”
2) Peter Olinto offers to meet up for coffee when they finish. that's also got to affect Becker passing rates 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7X-sLOtnpw
