Hi! I am graduating college this summer (middle of August) and am thinking about beginning to prepare for the CPA exam! I start a full time job in May at a local CPA firm.

One of my classes this summer requires me to study for two parts of the CPA exam. I plan on studying for FAR and BEC during the summer. Once I graduate, I planned on taking both of these parts before the September 10th deadline. Will studying for both of these during the summer and working full time be too much? This summer should give me nearly 3 months to study for both sections. Also, once I begin studying how long do you recommend I wait before taking the test? I am afraid that when it comes time to take both test’s, I will forget everything from the prior 3 months.

I never read a book during any of my studying for the exams. I used the Rogers lectures and cut the book into notes to refer to as I did the mcq. If you know you learn well from Rogers lecture then I would suggest his videos but beware it will consume a lot of time to watch them all. I did not mind since I was not spending the time reading the material. You might want to consider taking Audit instead of BEC during the summer though. If you have 3 months for both tests use 2 months to study for FAR then go straight into Aud and study for a month. There is a good amount of overlap, much more than would be in BEC.

Devin – I know you won't like this answer, but it really depends on the person. It took me about a year and a half from when I started studying to when I took my last exam. I know someone who finished all four sections in 4 months, or 6 months, or 9 months. I also know an Audit Supervisor that studied 4+ years with a full time job and still didn't pass. Just take a section w/o stressing too much over it. That'll allow you to kinda gauge how much time YOU'll need per section.
