This post may not be what you think it is by the title. It is a post that You can take this CPA initials and do you know what with them!!! I have about had it with this exam! My wife is expecting our first child (a baby girl) in March and all I want to do is spend time with my wife (while we have the time just the two of us), let my child (although she is in the womb) get to know who her daddy is instead of being cooped up in a room studying when I get home, and get everything ready for her arrival. I have passed two parts and failed the two I have left and I am just tired of failing them, not knowing what to study, seeing the same things I have studied before and just not caring! I am a man of faith and have prayed and asked others to keep me in their prayers and again I have failed these parts twice! Oh and I have paid so much for Becker review materials (updates, expired license, etc.), cpa exam fees, NINJA review items, and I am getting to the part of draining my savings!!!! I have seen 3 people in my firm study the same time as me, pass all parts the first time, and they are now CPAs. I want a relationship with my wife and daughter and I have been ruining it for the 2 years we have been married trying to study for these exams. I will confess that I have not put 100% into studying to where all I do is eat sleep breathe CPA material. I have studied when I get home from work for hours, feel like I have not learned anything, got bored doing multiple choice over and over, doing multiple choice and getting them wrong, writing materials where it just feels like I am writing and what is that doing, etc. That is just ridiculous and life is not about this! Life is about faith, family, then career! I am sorry I am ranting but I just had to get my feelings, emotions, and heartache out there.

Cajun..the test is passable if you want it bad enough. As others have said, life is only going to get more and more hectic after your daughter arrives..trust me. I have an 8 year old as well as a 19 month little boy. I study a good bit with my son sitting in my lap…it's tough sometimes but I get it done. I have a FT job as well as a PT that I work 25 hrs/week at. I am also actively involved in church with a couple activities every week). My daughter is also involved in dance/baseball. I study when I can. Is it fun? No. Am I tired? Yes. Do I think the sacrifice is worth it? Absolutely!! Find what works for you. You don't have to give everything up but you will need to sacrifice…whether that's helping around the house, sleep or whatever. Something has to give. Sit down with your wife and talk about it. Make a plan that will work for both of you. Study when the baby is sleeping! Study early, study on breaks, study in the car (audio), study at night. Once you pass that final test you won't regret that time spent because it was for your family. It was for a purpose! There is meaning to what your doing. Oh…and one last thing GEAUX TIGERS!!

Cajun – I asked what school you went to just to make sure I knew what you had behind you. ULL is no joking matter. It's not an easy credit college. It's tough! If you want me to go all Ragin' Cajun on you will, but that rarely works on our own kind, so I'll say this instead.

YOU CAN DO THIS! I know you don't have a lot of time on your hands, but try studying where ever you can. Waiting in line, during your commute, everywhere! As for doing all of the questions in Wiley, or Becker or anyone else, over and over again, I can tell you that you are only going to memorize the answers and not understand the concept. My advice is to work a problem, if you get it wrong because you honestly didn't know how to do it, then write a detailed explanation of the problem. Don't just copy the answer from the book. Go through the NINJA notes and use Google to find why the answer is correct answer is correct AND why the wrong answers are wrong. Do this for everything every time. If you miss a question on one topic, write your paragraph or several pages. Then if you turn around and miss the same kind of question, guess what, you need to write it again. After multiple failed attempts, Jeff told me to “get lots and lots of cheap legal pads and be prepared to fill them up.” He was right. I am still waiting on the Fire Chief to approve my plan to destroy the box of books, notebooks, legal pads and CD's and DVD's. The stack is as tall as I am.

I know your wife is getting uncomfortable and, well that's just going to get worse, so pamper her when you can. I don't know if y'all are Saints fans or not, but buy your wife the book “Coming Back Stronger” by Drew Brees. Even if she doesn't like football, she will like this book and understand why you are doing what you are doing.

    Here's my favorite quote:

“God, I know that if you bring me to it, you will bring me through it. I know you have a plan, but quite honestly I don’t see it right now. But I know it’s there. I know I have to believe. I know I need to have faith. I have to trust you. And I do trust you. But it’s hard right now.”

    Good Luck!!

I give up two nights a week and one weekend day with my three children, which is a significant amount of time considering I work full time as well. I give up practically all my time with my husband because if both of us aren't working then he's watching the kids and I'm studying. They are the most important thing in my life, but I know I am doing this for them. If you want it bad enough you will give up some of the things that you consider most important to you to make this happen. If you don't want it that bad, then you won't give them up. It's 100% your choice. If you do want this, my advice is to give up those things now because if you are this resistant to sacrificing those things now, you REALLY aren't going to want to sacrifice those things after the baby arrives.

    Time is an illusion.

When you get married, you realize just how much free time you had when you were single.

When you have a child, you realize just how much free time you had before kids.

When you have a second child, you realize how much easier it was with just one kid.

When you start studying for the CPA exam, you realize how easy it was just having two kids and a family.

When you find out you're having twins and your youngest is only 7 months old, you dream of the days of having 2 kids and just the CPA exams to study for. Ahh, the good ol' days. 😉

Seriously, though, when we had our boys after my first exam, I took time off to help my wife through the adjustment (plus we moved), then when the boys were a couple months old, I jumped back on the horse and finished what I started. I knew that the sooner I finished, the sooner I would all those study hours back to be with my family. Although, most of those study hours came after the kids were asleep, so really that time goes back to me getting longer nights of rest now.

Also, I had a UL-L hat in college. I just liked the chili pepper logo.

Casagarber – Woohoo! Geaux Cajuns! I love wearing my red on Fridays as well! Also, thanks for the comment. You are right and something just has to give for now.

gt5717b – I like the way you put that illusion. It will only get more difficult once the baby comes and if I stop now then it will only be that much harder to focus and get it done because that will become something else very important to me.

It is funny how God works through situations. Just last night after dinner, out of the blue by the way, my wife commented about me needing to study and that she can sacrifice the time that I need to study to get this thing finished with hopefully before the baby comes and we will have plenty of time to spend together 🙂 Did I mention to you how amazing this woman is and as you can see why I would rather spend my time with her than locked up in a room studying lol! This was my little voice from God telling me see you can do it and it needs to get done and your wife knows it.

Your wife sounds absolutely awesome, and you can certainly do this without sacrificing bible study, etc. (sacrifice sleep, its good practice for what lies ahead LOL!)

I still say splurge on a housekeeper, one thing I wish my hubby would have done for me 🙂
