Worrying about my experience….

    Hello All,

I recently just graduated and I am thinking a lot about the CPA exam. I work for a private company as an Accounting Clerk and I found out my Controller is a licensed CPA. In California, you need 2 years of general accounting experienced under supervision of a CPA. What I am worried about is this:

    1. Does the experience have to be under direct supervision? He is my controller, so I usually don’t report directly to him.

    2. Is my job considered general accounting experience? My daily tasks include: balancing the books (bank recon), posting journal entries dealing with payments and returned checks, and every quarter we review past performances.

    Thanks for your help!

I would call your state board.

Started sitting in May 2002, on and off. But since 2008 I've been nonstop and my scores are....
    AUD - 39, 48, 56, 65, 68, 73, 76!!! (Finally passed in Oct 2011!!!) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    REG - 75 (Lost Credit) 72, 68, 73, 75 (Passed again in Aug 2011) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    FAR - 65, 68, 75 (Lost Credit) 68, 73, 73, 80 (Passed again in May 2012) Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
    BEC - 65, 68, 71, 72, 72, 71, 76 (Lost Credit)- 70, 76!!!! I AM DONE!!! - Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
After 10 long years of studying, I AM DONE!!!! Finally a Licensed CPA in the State of New York!!

I am in CA and I will get me experience under my controller. I work with him maybe about 30 to 40% of the time. I think that your main concern should be is the controller willing to sign the documents saying that you have completed the general accounting work. if you look at the form it is very simple. They require the start and end date of supervision and that is basically it. He needs to basically “swear under oath” (figure of speech) that you have completed general accounting duties. I would check to make sure they are willing to attest that this what you have been doing. Who knows he might just take the word of your direct supervisor and sign off but I do not think that CA requires the person to be a direct supervisor.

    FAR 76
    REG 76(2x)
    BEC FAILED (2x)
    AUD FAILED (2x)

It should count, but not to sign off on attest and audit engagements…also make sure the controller's license is active.

    NEW YORK- DONE

    1) The controller is fine; if you kinda get along, he/she usually won't mind signing. In theory, your manager could've disappeared on medical leave, been a vacant position, extremely incompetent and/or the controller decided to directly supervise you. Most state boards are not really interested in untangling office hierarchy and the actual supervisory politics going on.

    2) Find it out if “general accounting experience” includes what you are doing, or if it needs to be some kind of attestation.

    Couldn't pass again!

    Hi All,

Thanks for your help! Hopefully when things slow down at my work I will have to get the courage to ask him! Hopefully he says yes!
