I have had mean things said about me within ear shot (on the other side of a cubicle wall). I have no idea if the person knew I was there or not since I was at another employee's desk, but it was so mean that I had to go into my boss' office, close the door and cry. Granted I was pregnant, but I'm not a crier so my boss was a little shocked and she told me about all the things she heard people say about her over the years. She has been our Controller since she was in her 20s and that pissed off more than a few people, but she's great at her job. The best advice she has given me is to ignore the bad things publicly, continue to be professional, under no circumstances do you discuss your dislike of someone with other coworkers because you never know who will spread what you say around even if you think you are truly friends, Friendship and business don't really mix because you have to think about the fact that you could be in a position one day where you may have to fire one of your “friends”. Point is–Do your job and do it well with professionalism. As the prior post says, the people that matter will notice.

Generally just doing your job well will keep you in good standing. I will say this though, sometimes the politics will be targeted at you, and in those cases you may need to defend yourself accordingly especially if you have a boss who buys into it. Luckily, most smart experienced supervisors know what's up, and if thats the case just do your job better than everybody else and keep in your bosses good graces.

In any event, if it isn't directed at you or your people (if you have a staff) the best bet is to say nothing. Oh yeah, if there is one thing I could say to my 22 year old self…it would be to trust NOBODY 100% in business. Well..that and “Pick the silly brunette NOT crazy blonde” but that's a different topic all together…

    MBA,CMA,CPA, CFF?, ABV?

You know I think the problem is more than just gossip. No offense but why do your coworkers know (or why would they care) what type or kind of degree you have? And why would they have any feelings about you embarking on an exam process?

I can assure you the only people who have ever been aware of my credentials are those who reviewed my resume and made the hiring decision. I've never been compelled to mention my education or license to my peers, and its never been an issue. Maybe you place more weight on it than you think others do. Maybe the fact that your credentials are so significant to you are the cause of the perceived distance with your peers.

    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

The way I get through the drama is to tell myself “Good or bad, if people are talking about me…I must be on the right track”. Keep your eye on the prize!

@mla1169–When I went to work at my company they published in our monthly newsletter that I had an MBA as part of my introduction. When I became a manager it was well known that I had to get my CPA. It's not uncommon in companies for people to know your educational background. Everyone with an office has their degrees on the walls and if you have a school book on your desk because you study during lunch, people find out. It doesn't necessarily mean that anyone runs around bragging about it.

Never hung a degree or my certificate on my office wall, those are what got me the office in the first place-Lol.

Then again I never concerned myself with workplace chatter. Didn't get to choose my peers so their thoughts about me matter only to them.
