Working and studying for the CPA exam.. this is probably not unheard of, but for all you full timers out there, HOW in the heck do you do it? I come home from work at 6:30 ish and I am POOPED. I eat dinner, shower, relax a little and don’t start studying until 9. I go to bed at 1.. I feel like everything I learned from the very beginning is slipping away and I’m constantly having to relearn everything all over again. My biggest problem is that I seem to forget everything I learn and even if i do study all day during the weekends.. it doesn’t seem to be enough. Bleh 🙁

Sounds like you need smaller bites/and or a different schedule.

Friend of mine found, although he was tired by the end of the day, that getting up extra early (5am neighborhood, and studying before work) made for more productive studying. Now, his work quality by 4pm might have suffered a bit, but probably less noticeable than a <75 on the exam lol

I used to take a 1/2 hour nap after work. It really helped.

I used to do only light reviews and study sessions during the week (couple hours at most) and do loads of studying on Sat & Sun. It's worked well for me so far, because I would learn material during the weekend, and review that and prior days' material during the week.

However, keep in mind that no matter how you slice it, it's going to be a b**** to study AND work. There's gonna be days where you just gotta grind through and sleepwalk through the day. I'm assuming your responsibilities don't allow to take much time off to study, so part of it is just to accept that this is gonna push you to the limit, and tackle it head on. Plan ahead, stay committed and don't get discouraged! It'll be worth it.

If you've only recently started studying expect it to take a month or two to adjust. Also I'd advise against showering and relaxing before studying. You're cueing your brain to wind down at exactly the time you need a second wind. Try studying after you eat and before your shower. Try going to the library or Starbucks or someplace that you don't associate with relaxing. Work and studying is not so bad, and it's certainly not forever.

Berrygoose – I am in the exact same boat. Completely exhausted when it is time to start studying. I know from going to school that once I got into my groove it wasn't so bad, so I know it will happen. Now it's just finding that groove and sticking with it.

Eating healthy is the most important thing you can do.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
