Does there seem to be any consensus on which segment of the CPA exam should be taken first? What is your impression on the different sections? Which one is the hardest, easiest, etc?

I definitely recommend taking FAR Before AUD.

I agree with the general consensus to take FAR first. Most people say it's the hardest, so if you fail on your first try, you might not feel as bad, but if you pass on the first try, it's a MAJOR confidence booster. A lot of the material you learn in FAR will pop up in the other sections, as well. The knowledge you learn studying for FAR is a great foundation for the other materials you will learn for the remaining exams.

I'm really glad I had BEC left for last. Just the thought “At least I'm not studying for FAR/REG” kept me somewhat positive. I also liked pairing AUD/FAR together then REG/BEC together because the volume of that combination allows you to take 2 exams per window.

I'm taking in FARB order but also another good combination imo would be BFAR. Second combination is helpful to get acclimated to the exam itself, short and reviews financial ratios for FAR. Notice though, that FAR either has to be taken first or second. This is b/c by the third exam, the burnout sets in and lack of motivation or other issues start popping up their ugly heads.

I'm going to agree with meatball that FAR last might not have been the best idea. I went with the idea of getting the tests that I thought I could pass first try out of the way ASAP. That way now if I were to fail FAR, I only have to worry about studying for FAR and not any of the others.

Everybody is different though, and like others say gotta finish them all eventually.

I did AUD, REG, BEC, FAR, followed by retakes of REG and FAR (all in that order).

I went with the “easiest first” (AUD) school of thought, when in hindsight I should have used my last summer before working to prep for FAR instead.

However, like others say, you have to pass them all eventually šŸ™‚ for me AUD and BEC were easiest, while REG and FAR were tied for hardest (REG because I'm not great at taxes, and FAR just because of the sheer volume of info)

    Good luck!!

I am a lawyer having graduated from law school in 2011 and studied tax. I graduated from college in 2007, majoring in business and finance. I already passed REG as my first exam on my first try which I’m happy about. I wanted to see if I pass a section so I chose REG which is the most relevant to my education and experience. I was originally set to take FAR second, but now I’m leaning toward getting BEC and AUD out of the way first so I can focus on FAR. I majored in Finance in college. I also took an auditing course last year to become eligible to take the exam so I’m guessing BEC and AUD would be more fresh in my memory compared to FAR. However, I hear a lot of people saying that info learned in FAR helps for BEC and AUD.
