Which CPA review course

I have been out of school for almost a year, and am now pursuing my CPA, thing is I am having difficulty deciding which review course to go with. First off let me say that I have ADHD. I need a course that will really explain the subject matter, but at the same time keep me engaged and not bored. I like Roger’s style, but am not sure if he explains and teaches the topics, or just skims over it. One thing I like about what I have seen of his course is that he uses mnemonics. But I have read here that his test questions are much easier than the actual CPA exam, and that you will need to supplement with Gleim or Wiley test banks – is this true? I have read that Yaeger really teaches the topics – but at the same time they are a bit disorganized, it is a bit confusing trying to decide which course to go with, the way they display their product could use some improvement – just my opinion. CPAExcel I am not sure is really a teaching course. I definitely need a course that teaches, and reintroduces topics with being out a year. The ADHD throws a wrench in the whole thing.

If you need something that helps you pay attention, I definitely recommend Roger. Based on what my doctor has told me, I might have ADD, and Roger definitely keeps me engaged despite this. You are correct in that he doesn't go into the minute detail that other courses may delve into, but he also makes sure you know enough to pass the exam. See my score for FAR (ignore AUD, I didn't give myself enough time).

Also, you definitely should supplement his course with a test bank. Regardless of the course you choose, this is a good idea. It seems like Jeff's NINJA MCQ are better than Wiley at this point for numerous reasons. More questions, better adaptive learning, cheaper, etc. Plus Jeff is always here to help with issues. It doesn't have an application, as in you need internet access, but I've heard good things. The only reason I use Wiley still is because I have 2013 and the new format is apparently very troublesome.

Sorry for my rambling, hope that helps!

Couldn't have done it without Becker. Totally worth the $ and has so many questions and methods within it that it keeps you going. Ninja Notes got me over the hump with FAR as well.

I think CPAexcel did a good job but you will need to study the material.

    FAR 78 (04/27/2015)

I was out of school for over a year, and truly do not think my college classes gave me the foundation needed for some topics to pass the exam. Yet, that is not their goal. College classes have a formula to pass as does the CPA exam. I am using CPAexcel, and you are somewhat correct in that they do not “teach” the material–at least for AUD. But, to me it seems that AUD is more understanding the concepts and applying the knowledge. I can't handle the videos for AUD, as they are super boring. I began FAR and thought CPAexcel was doing more “teaching” for that section, but I did not pass AUD so I am back to that. I am going to purchase Ninja MCQ this wee and really focus on the Sims, as that is what killed me on the exam.

    AUD: 67, 81 (NINJA MCQ's ONLY for 2nd Attempt)
    FAR: NOT GOOD, LARRY!
    REG: ??
    BEC: 4/4/2015

I was using Becker but I didn't like it. I recently purchased Ninja 10 Point Combo, and it is really good for keeping my attention. I don't have ADHD but I do have trouble focusing some times. His lectures are small bite size lectures, and his explanations in the MCQs are easily understood (much better than Becker). Basically, all of his products are laid out well that it is easy to just look at and understand. Haven't taken any tests since I switched to Ninja, but I feel like I'm understanding a lot.

I agree with the above poster and go with Roger. His lectures keep me entertained, and I actually look forward listening to him lol. I have seen some sample lectures from other review courses on youtube and it doesn't even compare. They don’t have the same energy and enthusiasm that Roger has, and they seem like they’re just reading off a book. You can really tell that he has a passion for accounting and loves to teach his students. I don’t have background in accounting (I was a Bio major), and I have managed to pass 3 sections so far. I would get his lectures, get some type of test bank (I heard ninja mcqs are really good), and get the ninja flashcards. With the flashcards you can type your own flashcards in addition to the flashcards you buy. This comes in handy since you can download one set of notes to all mobile devices (android phones, ipad, iphone).

    AUD: 74, 67, 76!
    BEC: 70, 75!
    FAR: 76!
    REG: 67, 73, 79!

I am using the 2014 Yeager Home study course. They use Wiley books and have lectures over each module. Everything is explained pretty well, and they focus on the important topics that are likely to be tested on the exams. It can be boring/frustrating at times listening to the same instructor for 20 hours, but I think its safe to say that everyone gets bored and frustrated while studying for these exams.

    I'd recommend Yaeger.
