Which CPA Review course to take?

I am 10 years out from my accounting degree. 4 kids, in law school currently. Finished a masters in between time.

I am very comfortable with Federal Income Tax, the rest of that stuff feels like it was a lifetime ago, (or someone else’s life).

What review would be the best fit to start literally from the ground up to review and pass? I’m sure I will catch on very quickly, it just has been many moons since I looked at anything. I should have taken the exams after the bachelors, but heck I was making such great money without it the desire kinda dropped. Most tax law firms expect you to have it, so now I better get on the ball.

Becker, if you can afford it. At least, that's my opinion…there are plenty of members on this site who will vehemently disagree with me!

Thank you very much for the feedback, I was worried that Becker's would jump right in with stuff I wouldn't even remember.

Jeff: demos? Why? and where? Thanks!!!

    Evilxs,

Here is a link to a thread that details alot of the software used:

    https://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/topic/my-awards-for-the-best-teachers-and-cpa-review-courses

I would also check out the :https://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum, there is alot of information on there about the different choices. Basically, people categorize them into teaching or reviewing software. I have used Becker but I have supplemented with Yaeger (this is more of a teaching method) because that was what I needed on a couple of exams. Some people just use one software, others use a combination–it is really a personal choice. Jeff is right, you should take a look at the demos, to see what is good for you.

    Best of luck.

I really do believe it depends on you. I think everybody has a different learning style and what is best for one person will not be best for everybody. I agree with Jeff to check out the demos and decide.

Evilxs – I'm in a similar situation in that I have also been out of college for 10 years. I did lots of research on review courses and decided to go with Yaeger because it is a teaching style course. In my opinion, Becker is more of a review course and assumes you are pretty familiar with the material. Plus Yaeger is half the cost of Becker. I just finished the FAR lectures 2 days ago, and could not be more satisfied with my decision.

I feel obligated to post a note about Becker. There's something about Tim's lectures that make a moderately difficult subject more difficult with the haste he utilizes. Pete treats the material as if it's your first time encountering it (he uses the analogy that he teaches it as if you'd partied so hard you lost it all).

Sadly, at least for REG, Tim does all the tax lectures (which I'm much weaker with) and Pete does the law lectures (which I took several classes in). I wish it were the other way around due to my own circumstances, but can see how actual tax professionals using Becker would love it.

I highly recommend that you supplement Becker's REG with either a Gleim or Wiley test bank. Other than that, I'm impressed with BEC and FAR. I felt very prepared for BEC and so far enjoying FAR. I still have no clue as to my scores so take my advice with a pinch of salt 🙂

Becker, it is the best. I have two kids myself, being out of school for a few years, working full time, and i think it is great. Just repeat the questions until you are so used to doing them. Practice, practice!!!!!!!!!!!!

    REG (2/17/11) – 85

    BEC (5/27/11) – 83

    AUD (7/15/11) – waiting

FAR (11/23/11) – maybe sooner, depending on how stressed I am, lol
