    Hey guys,

I’ll be finally finished reading through all of REG text and taking notes by tomorrow or early Saturday and ready to start my final 2 week review of MCQ’s, note review, etc. this weekend.

I haven’t done ANY MCQ’s yet, how do you approach them initially? Would you go through every topic one by one and try to do all the MCQ’s topic by topic? Do you do a set number of MCQ’s topic by topic, leaving some in each topic untouched and once you get through some in every topic, do a cummulative review of questions you haven’t done? Or do you do cummulative review of all topics from the start?

I’m always curious how others attack MCQ review.

    AUD - 90 Pass
REG - 70,61,81 Pass DONE DONE DOOOOONNEEE!!!!!!!!
    BEC - 79 - Pass
    FAR - 70,82 - Pass

I finish lectures first. Then I do about 3 to 4 practice sessions of 40-50 questions a pop. From here, I get a base line of what sections I'm proficient in and what sections I need work in. I attack the lowest scoring section work by re-reading that chapter and working the examples in the book. Afterwards, I do 20-30 MCQs on that section alone, hopefully boosting my overall score on that area. I then select questions that I've missed at least once to make sure I've learned from my mistakes. Then, I move on to the next problem area, and repeat this process until I feel proficient in all areas.

I prefer to do all the reading and then do the WTB. To me, it seems like doing the questions right after reading the chapter makes all the learning and review happen at once, and then it's too easy to forget the material by the time you finish reading and doing questions…but, that's because I prefer to use the MCQs as review, rather than part of initial learning. I think this is largely a personal preference – if you're learning well doing them right after the chapter, then by all means keep doing it that way!

    Hey @Lilla,

Would you say Wiley is good for REG? We seem to be using the same review program, and I've asked you questions regarding FAR before. I just would like to get a sense of how comparable the questions in the test bank are to the real thing.

    FAR - 93
    REG - 87
    BEC - 84!!!!
AUD - 99!!!!!! CPA exam complete.

I read and take notes on a chapter and then do all of the book MCQs for that chapter. After I've read all chapters, I make 1-5 note cards/chapter and do the three pre-loaded practice sessions in WTB for each chapter. After that I review my trouble spots, do a few extra rounds of subject-specific practice sessions, and do practice sessions that pull from all areas. I prefer the practice sessions so that I can see the explanations right away. I also like to keep my practice sessions small (10 MCQs) so that I don't get tired of a session or feel like I'll never finish.

I just finished running through the three pre-loaded practice sessions/module for REG, and WTB says my average is 85%. Now through Tuesday and I'm going to hit tax hard and just do a light review of business law, most of which seems really intuitive. Here's to hoping Wiley brings me another pass!!!

    BEC - 10/01/2013 - 80 - Wiley books and test bank
    AUD - 10/21/2013 - 78 - Wiley books and test bank
    REG - 11/27/2013 - 78 - Wiley books and test bank
FAR - 01/13/2014 - 79 - Wiley books and test bank, Ninja Blitz

@NYCaccountant: I think WTB has pretty decent MCQ to prepare you for the REG exam. You'll probably also benefit from practicing simulations.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

@NYC I had a very odd REG experience due to life conditions (like…getting permission to take my exam early, so leaving almost 4 hours earlier than needed, and arriving 26 minutes late due to car troubles…and if someone is 30 minutes late, they can't log them in to the system), so I can't remember much. My review was also less-than-normal due to other life issues, so all in all, it's pretty much a miracle that I passed. 😛 However, I felt about the same while taking the exam as I had with the others, so I'd guess that means that WTB prepared me for REG similarly to how it did for the others! It's just all a blur in my mind, due to all of life that was going on at the same time.

@Lilla – What was your method for practicing the SIMS? Did you find the the WTB SIMS or the Wiley book SIMS to be most helpful?

I never used the book SIMs or MCQs because I prefer the online/computer format for practicing, just purely as a personal-preference thing. However, truth be told, I didn't study SIMs that much at all. My philosophy was that the SIMs were just another group of questions – the only difference was that they didn't (always) have answer choices, so required a true understanding of the topic instead of just process-of-elimination…so I mostly focused on understanding the concepts when reading and understanding why MCQs were right or wrong, rather than doing lots of practice SIMs. I think I did 10 practice SIMs for one test and that's the most I did for any.
