What to tell ur friends when u have to study?!

My friends are not accountants and have no clue about the CPA process. Anyhow, I’ve been a bit antisocial since the past month.

I’ve been studying hard but my friends don’t understand why I have to study on the weekends (since I study during the week as well).

I’ve tried to explain the process but I don’t think they want to understand.

What are some reasons or excuses you used when you couldn’t attend a party or get together with your friends and family due to studying?

I told them I was studying. If I may ask, why do you feel the need to make up an excuse? Just because they don't understand what you are going through doesn't mean you shouldn't just honestly tell them you are studying.

I say, ‘yeah I have to go study for the CPA…you know what they say, if it were any easier, they would call it medical school'

    BEC - 87 (2/28)
    FAR - 76 (4/18)

I was called “a bad friend” to my face on Friday for not going on a weekend mini vacation with friends for the 4th. I take FAR on Friday and they didn't believe that I would be studying this weekend. It definitely sucks, but being a CPA is worth it and when I'm done I am going to party hard!!

I can so relate. I've been at Borders studying this weekend and my friends are like “who studies on a holiday..” Anyway it's nice knowing that I'm not the only one going through this.

I don't want to lie to my friends but sometimes I just say I have other obligations and I can't make it.. Rather than just telling them I'm studying.

Yes this is so worth it!

Happy 4th of July and study hard! 🙂

I lost a lot of friends because of my obsession with this test and it's taken a toll on my relationships, but ultimately I justify it by prioritizing whats important, and remembering in essence while its just a test, it also has a lot of future benefits

As my cost accounting professor says “Put your life on hold, put in your 90 hours a week now and establish yourself, you can always have kids later on and a social life, but set yourself up while you still can”…And I always keep that in the back of my head

If they're giving you a hard time about making this exam a priority, you may be better off without them in your life. Tell them to go google studying for CPA exam, and let them know in no uncertain terms that this is a full time job of itself.

“I have to study” is all I need to say anymore. Although most people have stopped inviting me out at all because they know I'm always studying. For the few weeks that I had in between my exams (when I still thought maybe I had passed REG), I was invited out almost every night. It was exhausting! But definitely a nice change. 🙂 It's good to know that I will still have friends when I finally finish this journey. At least, I'll still have the friends who matter.

I've found that people are more cooperative with the process if I tell them when I will be able to hang out. Such as, “hey I'm going to go to Applebees on Friday for dinner for a study break if you'd like to join.” Let's them know you still care about them.

The only reason people give us such a hard time is because they miss us. Keep in mind they are complimenting you about how much fun they think you are.
