The self-study method is you watching a video of a guy reading the book and highlighting the important stuff in the sections. The same thing happens in a live class, but the only advantage of a live class is you get to ask questions. But I really like the self-study method cuz you go at your own pace.
The best way to figure out what’s good for you is trial and error. I read the chapter first, then watch the video, vice versa but I didn't like that. What works best for me is I watch the video and after he’s done explaining a page, I pause it, read the page, make sure I understand it, then continue the video and move on to the next page. Once you’re done with the video/reading, do the MCQ for that section. Keep doing that section by section until you finish chapter 1 and do the same for the remaining chapters.
Since your test is in April, you can move at a pace of 1 ch./week for 9 weeks + 1 week for review. (Is FAR still 9 chapters? maybe it might be 10 starting 2012) Most people would think 10/11 weeks is too long to devote to a CPA section cuz you might forget the stuff you studied earlier on. And that is somewhat true, but that’s the pace I feel most comfortable with and seems to work for me. But what I would do is after every chapter, do a quick 30 MCQ quiz on the previous chapters to keep it fresh. If you don’t have work or other restraints, you can definitely knock out 2 chapters per week.
Anyway, it depends on what your study habits are. It's all about trail and error. Just see what works for you and stick with it.
