great question! i've been wondering about this myself. i always thought the research tab was just a one time thing to be used for the codification research simulation that may likely appear as part of your 7 FAR simulations?

For REG, the research function has the IRC (Internal Revenue Code). You can use it as a resource for all tabs in your simulation. If you're using Becker, it's like what they give you in the simulation software to do the research simulation. If you don't have access to something like this, go to the AICPA website and they have a sample test, so you can see what it all will look like on the actual test. The research function was super useful for REG in my opinion. I used it on every single one of my simulations. It's very time consuming to have to search through it, but it can really save your butt if you have no idea what the tax rule is to solve the simulation (provided that you know generally what topic to search for).

For FAR, the research function has the FASB ASC (Acctg. Standards Codification). I don't think it's as useful for the other FAR simulations (unlike REG). I feel it's much more wordy and confusing than the IRC. The IRC is more “black-and-white”.

The research tab saved my bacon in AUD. If it wasnt for the research tab, I don't get a 76 and I don't pass AUD.
