longnguyen87ParticipantHi everyone,
I hope you all study for your CPA’s exams and whatever you do, I hope to see a lot of big smile on everyone faces when you see your score report this Tuesday Feb 25.
I took my first section in Jan 6, 2014. The first section was BEC. Subsequently, I took REG (01/24) and FAR (02/10). Having successfully passed the BEC (91) section with high score, I hope to see the same results again. Everyone who took the CPA exam within the same period like me may feel really nervous about result that will come out in a few days. This morning, I took my NTS out to check the score even though I know it’s not there yet. The feeling of “I can’t wait to see my score” is hard to describe but I am sure that lot of you share my feeling.
I did not do well on the REG, especially the Simulations. I felt the MCQs were not too difficult but I could be wrong. The FAR was okay. However, my focus should be on the AUD test which I will have next Monday (02/24). I post this thread just to release some pressure that I am currently have and hope to see a lot of 75 and above from other CPA candidates this Tuesday Feb 25. π
BEC 01/06/14 91
REG 01/24/14 Waiting
FAR 02/10/14 Waiting
AUD 02/24/14 Studying
BEC 91 (01/06/13)
REG 91 (01/24/13)
FAR 86 (02/10/13)
AUD 93Feel so close π

longnguyen87Participant@ Ray CPA: I used Gleim Review. Even though I used it for most of my studies, I don't think it is the best reviewed package out there. There are some chapters in Gleim that made me confuse sometimes. I think Wiley does a better job in explaining and connecting each topic together than Gleim.
@kma0505: I don't have a study secret. :D. I study and practice the MCQs and SIMs like every other candidates. The reason I was able to fit everything into one window is that I started preparing since May of last year. This year, I just used the remaining time to review (lot of review because I almost forgot everything as soon as I done with them last year :D) and try to cover the chapters I did not go through.
Since you only have AUD and BEC left, I think I can give some general advice.
For BEC: Study the concepts carefully, since this is the concept test, you would expect questions asking about concepts. I did not mean that you wouldn't see any calculation question, but it should be the first step in mastering the materials.
Used the AICPA CSO to determine how much time you should spend on each topic. Some topics will be tested heavily than the others, so you should spend your time accordingly.
When I studied for BEC, I often tried to identify the key points from each chapter. I tried to remember the definition, purpose, objective, when it's applied, and compared the different between key points. For example, when you study the concepts of NPV, IRR, PI (Profitability Index), etc, think about the purposes, objectives, differences of these methods. You properly want to know how to apply these methods as well. Understanding will help you remember these concepts better.
Since I don't know whether I pass the AUD or not, I will refrain from giving advice on this one. I will let you know when I receive my AUD. I promise to share my study secret if I pass. :D. Good luck with your FAR and other studies.

longnguyen87ParticipantI can't give specific advice about FAR or REG since they both difficult. The reason I said FAR and REG are difficult is because each topic covered in these sections are hardly related and independent from each other (this is my experience though, you may have different view). Taking AUD vs. FAR for example, when studying for AUD, some topics are interrelated and supported for each other. For example, when you study internal control, that related to risk assessment, financial assertions, and other substantive tests. In other chapters throughout AUD, we see the same concept repeated several time and be applied for different accounts. Studying for AUD; therefore, is much easier when we understand the pattern and underlying concepts. That helps to save time. (I hope I pass AUD since I used the shortcut way to study for the exam. Besides BEC, AUD is the section I spent less time on. Hope it not backfire. )
Back to FAR, studying chapter about A/R is almost independent from studying about A/P. Therefore, I can't think of any shortcut way to advise you except mastering the materials from each chapter before you move on. Understand journal entry related to each topic is as important as understand the concept. When you can write the journal entry or can think of it in your head, you can be sure that you understand the material.
One advice is focus on your time management. Use the CSO from AICPA to allocate your study time accordingly. For example, the CSO stated that Governmental and Non-profit Acct total contain about 16-24% of the materials. Therefore, you should spend about 16-24% of your time on this topics. If you are strong in this area, you can reduce your time. But my point is do not spend a lot of time on area where the percentage is lower and leave little time on important area.
REG: I hate this one because this section seems to contain a lot of questions, endless rules to remember. It's really hard to study if you do not have any tax experience. Just study and create your cheat sheet, keep referring to your cheat sheet whenever you feel like it to keep your memory fresh. Know how to work the simulation is also important as well since it will be about 40% of your score. For SIM, make sure you know how to do the research question because it is the easy point to take.
My strategy of taking exam for REG is when I saw the questions that I know with some confidence, I make sure that I answer these questions correctly. I reread the confident questions and my answers before moving on. My point is every point on the exam counts (there will certainly be some questions that you are not sure; therefore, don't lose points on the sure question because it will determine your pass or failure). That leaves me with some unsure questions. Normally, I would be able to eliminate some answers on unsure questions based on what I know about the topic tested, on the wording of the answers, and on the idea behind each testing question. It's really hard to explain how I did it but normally after a lot of practicing MCQs, you can see the pattern of wrong answers. Sometime the wrong answer looks similar to the right answer but some words negate it. Looking for these words and try to relate with what you know about the topics tested will help you find the right answer.
Finally, it's up to you. Just do it and you will get there. π
Off topic, are you Vietnamese? Can't tell by your name though π
