CPA Review Video lectures–How useful are they?!

    Hi everyone,

I’m in the process of choosing materials to incorporate into my study plan. I know that I’ll be purchasing the Wiley software and Ninja notes. I just wanted to know how useful everyone thought their lecture videos were. This will be my deciding factor in ordering the Roger CPA Review Cram lecture videos (which include the Roger books). Any other recommendations for study material?

It depends a lot on how far out of school you are. If you are just looking for a basic review course then video lectures that explain topics in great detail probably is not right for you.

However, if you haven't had an accounting course in 10 years, then a more thorough course with in depth reviews may be more appropriate.

I'm actually graduating in 2.5 weeks so I guess I don't need a lecture that goes into a ton of detail. It's been awhile since I've had my intermediate accounting classes so I've forgotten a lot but I guess it won't be too hard to pick it all back up. Thanks!

In my opinion – total waste of time. I don't need someone to read to me from a book and tell me what to highlite (Becker), I learn better by reading the book and practicing MCQ's and SIMs.

It really comes down to your own studying style (do you prefer to focus on lectures or solving MCQs). You do have a nice advantage of being a recent graduate but depending on your accounting curriculum and professors you might still need to do some additional work to get ready for the exam. Roger is definitely not simply reading from the book (it seems most of the other videos out there are doing just that). I would totally recommend Roger, especially if you still have some weaker areas in your accounting knowledge where you need actual tutoring instead of trying to figure out things by yourself.

Thanks for the advice, Long Journey! What did you find most useful with Roger's program? The videos or his books? Also, did you enroll in his full program or did you use his cram sessions?

When I first started studying I was just going to buy a book, and simply read it and do thousands of MCQ's. After about 2 weeks in, it was difficult to focus on just using that method, so I sprung and got the package from CPAExcel that has video lectures and self-study. Im glad I did, it is much more organized than what I could have accomplished on my own, working 60 hours a week. Video lectures seem to be working for me, because it outlines the important parts of the text for me, and the CPAExcel lectures are not long and drawn out per topic.

I got the full course and I relied heavily on both the videos and the books. I felt that both are excellent (Roger's book is extremely fat-free compared to Wiley textbook). Be careful that there are some concepts that aren't discussed in Roger's coursework (he doesn't deny that and solving the MCQs can reduce from the negative effect.

I haven't tried the cram course, but if you feel that you are already familiar with most of the concepts then it might be a cheaper and more practical option for you.

With regards to CPAExcel, their course is good, extremely organized, and highly to the point and covers more materials than Roger's course, but the lectures are closer to reading a power point presentation. They aren't bad in any way but I needed something similar to Roger's method to truly understand the materials.
