Too early to start studying?

Is there such a thing as studying for too long? I will meet the requirements to begin sitting for the exam in January 2014 and really want to start strong with a success. Could I potentially burn myself out if I began studying a couple of hours a night in say Sept/Oct?

I would say it is way too early to start studying. I would recommend (and I believe others on this forum would agree) spending two to three months at the most studying is all you need if you have a well planned strategy. The problem with studying for too long is you are apt to forget what you studied in the beginning.

I would agree with smp73…but with one modification: If there are topics you feel you are particularly weak in, you could study those now. Just think of it as taking an additional course in that topic, whether you use CPA materials or something else. Like, if you felt like Auditing was a really weak topic for you, then you could get an Auditing textbook or a CPA Auditing book, and you could study it to try to learn auditing better. However, when you got ready to take the actual CPA exam, you would still want to study as if you were fresh to the section, because anything that you learned before December will not be fresh enough to test on in January. Studying this fall can provide a more solid foundation, but won't provide everything you need for the exams.
