Theories like this thread is why CPA exam rates are around 50%. FAR has the most material and requires the highest number of study hours. There are no shortcuts for FAR! Auditors can takes shortcuts on AUD, finance people can take shortcuts on BEC, and tax specialists can take shortcuts on REG. The people who have enough knowledge to understand FAR have probably already been CPAs for a number of years.

Everyone is different, but the minimum study hours per part, in order of BEC, AUD, REG, and FAR, are in the neighborhood of 60, 80, 100, 120. I studied a little more than that for each part, and then put in 40 extra to pass AUD the second time.

Skip the video, that's what I usually hear from other people.

Some folks skip both lectures and video and simply attack MCQs. I don't think I can do that. I need to read the book!

I am not proud that on my 3rd attempt of FAR, I needed the entire months of March, April, & May to again prepare and review with a full-time job. Yes, my study pace is slow. But FAR has so much materials to cover. After going through F6-F10, I felt I almost forgot what's in F1-F6. Once I revisit F1-F5, then I forgot F6-F10.

There's one particular topic during my 1st and 2nd attempt that kept showing up on my actual test. So on my 3rd attempt, I made sure I fully understood it before testing. On the night before the test, I was so excited to see this topic on my test. “Come on, Mr. Alien Currency, break a leg!”

I was so confident I can compute any international currencies the examiners would require me to arrive to. Know what?, it didn't show up! Bummer!

Nobody can really tell what we are going to see on the actual test day. I have always wondered why is this even called UNIFORM US CPA Test.

That's why there are more examinees with multiple attempts than with candidates with single attempt and passed.

Should we not ask folks what to focus more than what to skip?
