mla1169ParticipantDo you work outside the home? If you're home all day, is there a recreation department program they can go to a few hours a day so you can study?

ReneeNCMemberYou have to get them to leave you alone. I know that sounds simplistic, but I have done all my studying with my 6 youngest at home.
This is my basic schedule:
6-8am Study
8-9am Breakfast and other morning stuff
9-12 noon – Homeschooling
12-1 Lunch (study)
1-3pm Homeschooling
3-4:30 Study
4:30-7pm Chores, Dinner, etc.
7-9pm Study
That is the basic idea. My kids are getting more used to, “Mama is studying, go find something to do.” (Now, mine at home are ages 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 14, so your mileage may vary.)
They have spent way more time watching TV than in the past. I have (finally) got them to the point where they can do most of the chores. They make their own breakfasts and lunches (except the 3yo – someone makes his.)
Give it some time. It's easier for me because they are always at home, so there isn't an adjustment period.
I second the recreation dept idea if you have that option, though. Or McDonalds Playland (free internet and the kids can play.) I study at parks, too, while they play.

Tina82MemberReneeNC – I cannot believe you are studying with six kids at home. And here I am feeling sorry for myself because I'm taking an exam tomorrow that I'm not ready for. Yeah, stuff came up here and there but I only have a cat (who btw is annoyed because of lack of attention lol).
Good luck to you in all your studies!!

MaverickMemberIt is difficult to study while my children are home for the summer. My youngest, who is ten, and is very much a mama's boy enjoys being near me. My fifteen year old gets moody when he wakes up and does not find a prepared home cooked meal. It is difficult to focus with all the distractions.
ReneeNC, oh my gosh! You are a super woman. I am amazed at your REG score while caring for 6 children, especially with how young some of them are. If you don't mind me asking, how long did you study for REG? I started last week and scheduled to take the test in August but want to try the first week of July.
Good luck everyone with your exams.

ReneeNCMember@Maverick – I studied for a solid 4 weeks, about 4-5 hours per day. It was Christmas time, so I wasn't homeschooling and my oldest son was home from school. Also, REG is my area, so it was easier. I didn't take BEC for another 4.5 months because I didn't have as much time due to my grad classes. I don't think I passed it, even! I am seeking a job, so my study time will drop eventually to 3-4 hours per day.
As for moody 15 year olds….ugghh. I have a moody 14 year old that I want to duct tape to a wall on a regular basis. Tell yours that my 9yo cooks breakfast on a regular basis (eggs and bacon or waffles.) Maybe you can shame him into making *you* a hot home cooked breakfast! LOL

Mrs 300ParticipantWow – I'm so glad that someone posted this thread b/c this is giving me hope. ReneeNC – you are my new inspiration! My kids are pretty good about knowing that “mom is studying for her big test” but I have trouble getting over the guilt. I feel bad that I'm missing out on their younger years. But I know that once the test is over, these feelings will all be a distant memory!

KellyPMemberTrickster – It can definitely be hard. I am a single mom with a 7 year old and I work outside of the home so when I get home he needs some Mom time and doesn’t have siblings to play with. . .although I can’t imagine 6 little ones running around!! I wake up early and study for the CPA and my classes and put him to bed at a decent time during the week. We keep Friday nights as our special night. I don’t study that night and we play outside, rent a bunch of movies and stay up late. It definitely makes it harder to get up Saturday but he is better behaved and feels less neglected and I feel less guilty 🙂

ReneeNCMemberKelly, that is a good point! Having only 1 child (especially as a single parent) would make things way more difficult than my 6. They can occupy each other, watch out for the little one, etc. I also have a husband that will hold down the fort while I escape to McDonalds to study (hey, it's the only place that is close by with free internet.)
I think I might adopt your plan – keeping Friday night as family night. A little less sleep won't hurt me.
Thanks for reminding me that sometimes you have relax a little. I do have until July 6, 2013….

kmwgraceMemberI have an only child as well but we are paying for her to be in a full-time summer pre-K program so I can study for this test. She starts Kinder in August and she'll be going to public school so thankfully no more payments for that! I'm also job hunting though so if something actually comes through my schedule will have to change drastically & I'll be following the ELL plan. I can definitely see how having more kids (once they're out of the baby/toddler years) would make things somewhat easier – the older ones can take care of the younger ones.
As far as the cranky teen expecting a home-cooked breakfast – I agree with what someone said above, he can make his own stinkin' breakfast! Only takes 2 minutes to fry or scramble a couple of eggs for goodness sake! lol…
