If you would get some support it would be worth telling them. It depends on the employer.

Most employers I would tell, but some would not understand, and that would be hard to

    tell them about the exam.

Do you have a reason to believe that they would not be supportive? Even non public

employers can be understanding and provide support.

cpa066729 – I agree with Beach Girl, but the fact that you posted the question means you are hesitant to tell them. I would go with your gut feeling.

I told my boss when I started taking the exams and he made a lot of comments about how I would leave once I became a CPA. From that point, I stopped telling him because I do plan on leaving =)

The pro for telling your job is that it may be easier to take time off for exams if they are supportive. On the other hand, Prometric offers plenty of evening and weekend test times if you would like to keep the information private.

I agree that it depends on how supportive they will be. I previously worked in banking and my job paid for 100% of my undergrad degree in Accounting. They knew that I'd likely leave once I started the CPA process, but were okay with it because the knowledge that I was gaining helped them out in the time that I was there.

well taking time off isnt an issue since when i was in school for my masters, i was able to take off for exams anyway. as for being supportive or not, im not sure however it is worth noting none of my colleagues or supervisors have a cpa

It depends how much they will value a CPA in their organization.

The reason I suggest waiting to mention it is because from an employer's perspective you haven't actually done anything until you've passed a few parts and you're close to being done. When it's close to being a reality you potentially have something to bargain with otherwise there's really nothing to talk about.

In my case, my boss knows that I expect to be done with the exam next week and she's concerned I will leave so last week she gave me a 10% raise in hopes that I would stay.

@cpa@75 I'm not sure it's how much they value the CPA so much as it's how much they value the employee. A lousy employee with a CPA is still a lousy employee.

    Just my thoughts.
