Quick question Ninjas: I received my B.S in Accounting in 2012 and M.S. in 2013, but I am in the military and have essentially brain dumped the material by now. I have three years left before the end of my contract and I do not want to re-enlist, but would rather sit for the CPA exam and take my chances in the private or government sector. Simply too many deployments for my daughters and the world is essentially on fire.

Should I take a half of year to go through my old accounting text and refresh my memory or should I purchase the complete 10 Point combo (can’t afford the big money programs) and execute Jeff’s plan for passing the exam (i.e. pile of legal pads, audio, book, and MCQ till I pass or give out!).

refreshing your memory for 6 months would be an absolute waste of time. I would do Jeff's 10 point combo and do MCQ's until you are so sick of them. Based on being in the military (Thank you for service!), you probably learn by hands on?

I went back to school to get the accounting credits I needed (24) in August 2013. I finished up in December 2014. The classes I took consisted of Intermediate I, II; Tax I; Audit I; Advanced; and Fraud. I started studying for FAR in 2015. While I did remember some of the material that I had (very recently) learned I can't say that it was instant recall and don't feel like having taken the classes recently gave me any kind of advantage. In addition there are people on this forum who have been out of school for 10+ years and dove right into studying for the exam. All that is a long way to say forget reviewing the old textbooks – go ahead and start studying for the exam. 🙂

As a Veteran, my suggestion is to forget about your old textbooks. Chances are they are outdated anyways.

Second, because you are in a high deployment unit, I would not try to bite of my than I can chew and would just pick one or two sections to study for. The reason I say this is due to the fact that you may not have the time to study if you are deployed often. Then there is the issue of internet access which is mostly done through all the review courses. The books will have some mcq's but is very limited. So you would have to decide what works.

Finally, you would want to take the exam section that you just study for ASAP because it is easy to forget the materials. You also have to factor in the rolling 18 months for the exam after your first pass. 18 months seems like along time for the other 3 sections but it does fly fast especially if you are deployed often and are unable to study.
