I have recently graduated college and I am working full time at a credit union. I am also getting married next september. Would it be better for me to do part time tax work in evenings after work or focus on passing the CPA exam? I know experience is really nice, but what should take priority?

Focus on the exam. Make it your goal to finish before you get married. Experience is good but doesn't hold a candle to CPA after your name.

Agree with Bluegirl…as a person who HAD to work full-time while studying, I recommend those that are able to not work and knock out the CPA..you have your whole career to get experience. With you getting married, you will have even less time to prepare to pass each part on the first try. Stay put and knock out that exam.

Put it this way: I have taken one exam each quarter this year. I'm three for four on the exams: my original 74 on Audit came right after tax season. I worked every Saturday at my old firm to make some extra money, and tried to study around a full-time job and the tax work. Yeah, I only failed by one point, but I pushed myself too far and wasn't really ready for the exam.

Unless you really need the money, get the exam over with as soon as possible.

    A 85 11/12/12 (74 on 1st attempt)
    R -- 2/25/13
    F 79 8/29/12
