What is an effective method for taking good notes? I only took notes during lectures back in college and I cant say they were the best then. Is there some methodology or is it as simple as rewriting in your own words?

I think the most important technique is to drill MCQs and take notes on insight from practice problems, why you got it wrong, etc. Taking notes on summary details of each major topic is also helpful to me so far.

    BEC- Waiting 7/23/13
    AUD- Studying 8/12/13
    FAR- Signed up 10/1/13

After I watch each (Becker) lecture, I then read the chapter and take notes. I usually rewrite everything we highlighted (barf) and all the side notes we took. It sucks, but it works for me! It forces me to actually READ the chapter, because during the lectures I usually doze off :).

I also take notes on the MCQs I get wrong, or ones I get right but I'm not quite clear on the explanation. The few days before the exam, I'll reread all my notes. People swear by rewriting their notes (or the Ninja notes), but I don't do that.

    R - *77*(02/'13)-Becker & NINJA
    A - 71('11); *87*(04/'13)-Becker & NINJA
    F - *76*(08/'13)-Becker & NINJA - "server upgrade" survivor
    B - 60('11); *82*(10/'13) -Becker & NINA

    DONE, DONE, AND DONE.

How will you learn the materials the best? For some it is mostly the MCQ's, for others detailed notes is important.

This time around, I may be “over-killing” it, but I want to pass and be done. For me, I can “memorize” the correct answer, when just doing the MCQ's and I have always learned well reading. So I read Roger's text prior to watching the video's. I take detailed notes, and list areas I did not really understand. At time I mostly write what he says. I will take out unimportant words, and my notes are not in sentence format. If I have an observation for myself, I just it on a sticky note off to the side. It helps me reference when reviewing. I also use different colors of ink -(it makes the note taking more “fun” for me and with references in review) One for definitions, key points and equations.

Then I watch the videos, taking notes on difficult areas and the “I got it now” moments. To supplement my weaker areas I will read the Wiley text and take notes. This is not very detailed, and for me goes quickly. Doing this raised my scores by 15 points. More than what I need to pass.

Then I take the questions out of the back of Wiley's book, and do them. I add notes when I get the question wrong, or did not understand why I got the question right. Then onto the Wiley online test bank. By this time my scores are 85-90 on the questions. I repeat all missed until I get them right.

As this is overkill for many, take what ideas may work for you and use it. You will be studying for a while, so find a way to make it engaging and work for you.

OMG Beach Girl – I love that you take your notes in different colors. I would SO do that, but I use pencil for everything. I feel I'd get too OCD with the colors though, and then at some point, I'd mess up with my color coding and have to write everything over again.

I was complaining to my boss once that I started studying audit with my yellow highlighter, but then it died. And all I had left was a pink highlighter. But this particular pink highlighter would leak through the pages, but I couldn't POSSIBLY start using a new color highlighter, especially halfway through the chapter. She thought I was nuts. I'm very OCD with my notes and colors, lol.

@ neika822 I am a little OCD with them too. With complex subjects, I always take notes with colors, so that helps – I have used colored pencils too. One of my pens was out of ink, and I live in a small town on the coast, I was afraid I would have to drive 45 min to get more pens! No other pens wrote as nice and had the same color ink. Fortunately our drug store had them in stock.
