Not losing friends over this dang test… - Page 2

Hi guys! It’s been a while. I realize that this is a rather paltry problem compared to most test-takers, but I seem to be having a bit of trouble with my friends as I journey through this exam. It seems that most of them either get offended that I can’t hang out/change plans due to wanting to study (for REG, currently), or talk to me less, thereby making me wonder, “Do they just think I’m a boring loser now?!” I know that this isn’t rational, as I’m working towards something that is unbelievably important, but I worry that I’m going to lose friends over an exam, and that’s not healthy.

How do you tell your friends that you love them, but that you are just going to kind of be out-of-commission for a while – and have them actually understand?

Why was there bacon in the soap?!

BEC 4/19/2013: 79 - the "easiest" one doesn't mess around lol
AUD 11/13/12: 90...NOT SURE IF SRS
    REG 2/11/13: 87!!!!! LOLWUT!!>???!?
FAR 8/18/12: 81 MOFOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (srsly thought I failed lolol)

Passed all 4 on the first try using Roger, NINJA Notes for FAR, and NINJA Audio for REG & BEC.

    I agree with Kricket 100%.

However i also have just taken the i am really busy approach and limited contact i will meet for coffee once and a while and take a phone call or text a bit but seeing people has been really limited. I will take my breaks and meet people for a little but I feel like avoidance has worked better for me then explaining. How sad is that?

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

LSNYC I have (sadly) taken the same approach right now. I just need focus. When someone has asked why I have said I need to cut out any controllable distractions for a while. Lets hope its all worth it…wait wait it will all be worth it!

I've worked in public accounting for the past 6 years, so my friends are very well trained at this point in the game to know that I will be MIA from mid December to mid April! My crew has been very respectful of the CPA study plan and I try to venture out for book club once a month and returns calls/texts within a day or so just so I don't seem like a jerk and it gives me some modicum of normalcy…especially during tax season! The majority of my friends are lawyers who have dealt with the bar exam or teachers who've had to jump through lots of hoops and educational compliance to do their jobs, so I feel very fortunate that my core friends are on my team! People who give you a hard time for wanting to better yourself don't deserve your valuable time and attention!!!!!

I do get the occasional person in my social circle that is totally clueless and says something like “I thought all tax people worked at Liberty Tax Service, is that what the CPA exam is for?” but I'm always quick to assure them that I don't have to put on a costume and stand on the curb out in front of my office after lunch…which is why I went to grad school and am going for my CPA in the first place! However, this topic is better discussed in my all time favorite A71 thread “dumb things said by others about the exam!” πŸ˜‰
