What do you guys think is better: To do tons of MCQ in random order or tons of MCQ section by section? Why?

I ask because for AUD/BEC I did the whole Gleim test bank in random order and did well on both. For REG I decided to do section by section (20-30 MCQ) and failed. It is most likely coincidence but I think that doing the MCQ in random sets more closely mimics the actual test come test day. For me, going section by section just made me forget the questions I did at the earlier chapter once I get to the ending chapters.

I am curious to hear what you guys successfully do.

I would first doing the Mcq's section by section when I am learning new material. It was the best way for me to see if I have understood the material or not.

Then once I am doing all the sections I would then do then in random order and on all the topics. This helps me feel like i am sitting the exam and also i get to see the report to which chapters I am truly weak in and then go back to review them.

    FAR 05/27/14; 786/110 - Done !

I always focus on a section/topic at a time. It helps identify your weak areas and what you should be focusing more on during those final days before exam day.

    BEC: 73, 81
    AUD: 85
    FAR: 71, 77
    REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! πŸ˜€

*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently πŸ™‚

I do Wiley TB MCQ's section by section but I do ALL of the questions, so not 20-30 per section but 100-200 per section!

So, for instance, if I have 123 MCQs for Engagement Planning, I'll do them all at once – just to be sure I covered all of the questions for that section, then I'd go back to it later…but what I found more useful is to do the same section twice in a row – that way you'll memorize the questions you got wrong and if you do the same MCQs the 3rd time a week later, you'll be more likely to remember why they were right or wrong.

So, to sum it up – I did 90% of MCQs section by section x 3-4 rounds! Until I got 80-90% of them right. (no 20-30 practice sessions or practice exams)

I actually tried the practice test once for FAR ONLY and I found it tricky – when you have to switch from one topic to another….but I decided that the best way to study is to concentrate on one topic at a time and try to master it as much as you can….it worked for me pretty well so far! The only trick is – you have to have enough time to finish the MCQs all at once…and usually it takes about 0.5 minute per question, so 200 MCQs = approx. 2 hrs x 2 rounds….and for AUD it gets REALLY old!!!!! But at least there are no calculations so I can practice on my tablet whenever I want to – I recently discovered the app for Wiley Test Bank! I had to pay $60 for it but I think it was worth the $….I got it on my Kindle Fire and I like it! I can practice MCQs on my couch now while watching TV πŸ˜‰

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)

In the beginning of my study process I work the MCQs section by section after reading the material for that section. After all sections are completed I work through a random mix of questions (WTB lets you customize) and finally I do timed practice exams to simulate the actual exam. In between, I write (add to) notes and rewrite notes to get all the “fact nuggets” I can πŸ™‚

    3XBEC:75 * 4XREG:82 * 4XFAR:76 * 7XAUD:77

    Section by sections when learning.

Maybe random when reviewing, but section by section still probably better.

The way I studied for AUD was this:

    Read whole book (gleim)

Then did about 40% of the MC in the Gleim test bank, section by section.

I just made a spreadsheet that listed out the total MC for each chapter and section. Then multiplied by 40%.

After I went all the way through that, I went back through and did the last 60% chapter by chapter (there are 20 in gleim)

Once done with that, I bought the Wiley test bank and just did random sets of 25 until test day.

Again, this all depends on your learning style.

    FAR - 83
    AUD - 73 92
    BEC - 83
    REG - 88
