    Hi everyone,

I graduated with a finance degree a few years ago and have been working in financial control. I’m planning to start studying for the CPA, and I want to really understand the material well, not just superficially or the minimum to pass the test. What would you recommend?

How long do you think I should study for/quanitity of material I should cover considering I only had 2 accounting courses in college (101 and managerial). I know I’ll have to take more classes before I can get the actual license.

    Thank you very much,

    Dmitry

Sorry to bring a post back from the dead, but I wondering if anyone knows of any states that do not require accounting classes? I have a total of 6 semester hours and found that Alaska has:

4.Degree and Qualifying Experience which includes:

a completed bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, conferred by a regionally accredited college or university; and

completion of one year of public accounting experience under the direct supervision of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

My only issue with this is that I'm not sure what constitutes public accounting; is that only big 4, or does Department of Defense qualify as public accounting? I'm trying to weigh my options, without having to take any more classes after an MBA.

Ronald – Public Accounting is basically all accounting firms that do tax, consulting, auditing, etc. Private accounting is working for a company/business like Fortune 500 and lower, but not necessarily publicly traded. Department of Defense is straight up government.

I would be surprised to find a state that does not require accounting classes.

    CPA EXAM: DONE!!!!
    Ethics Course: Passed
    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
    Certification Date: 4/2/15!!!

I bet every state requires some accounting classes, but if you want an easier route, then you should look into the state of Maine. They require the least amount of accounting classes and don't have any specific accounting class requirement besides auditing. Good luck

Thank you excobar. I can probably knock the three remaining classes out in a semester at my local CC online. I'll be working for the federal gov't, so it doesn't really matter what state the CPA is from. Also, my state has reciprocity with Maine, so that's a huge plus.
