Hello to Jeff and all the members of the forum.

I recently started studying for the CPA exam again months ago. I have yet to passed any exams yet, but I am working hard to pass them.

My story goes as follows. A few years ago during the height of the recession, I got laid off from my AP accounting job. Due to my lack of work experience, I had a hard time looking for work and with the limited funds I had, I was unable to take the CPA exams. Fast forward a few years later, I was able to land a job in retail. It sucks, but it did pays some bills. Recently though, it got to the point where I am so sick of it and really need to get out of retail. I recently became an EA, but my ultimate goal is to obtain my CPA license. I just purchased entire Gleim 2014 CPA review course (The only thing I can really afford right now) and will be studying like mad to pass the exams. Because of my limited work experience, I need to pass the exams ASAP and need to study with a sense of urgency.

Lately, I have been taking both an active approach to networking to look for job leads, and at the same time, I am also studying for the CPA exams. I found out about this forum a month ago at a Mixer, sponsored by CalCPA, and have been enjoying reading all the threads and posts. Like most of the posters here who are aspiring to become CPAs or acquiring other designations, I applaud you guys and ladies for not giving up and continue to march on for every failure. I myself am not giving up because i know I will achieve the goal of becoming a CPA one day.

It is due to this forum, that has been keeping me sane and motivated both from my job and for each exam failure.

Welcome to the forum, many of us started along or short time ago with studying and exam taking. The best part about this journey is having an entire body to go with you. I really like when the veterans surface to comment and add a little flavor to some of the topics. Just remember, this is a journey, some may have sprinted through, but everyone won't so just pace yourself and take full advantage of all the good support this forum has to offer. To give up means you never will become a CPA. Again, welcome to the slug fest. :-))

Hey Skynet I use the Gleim review system also and I think you will really like it. I like how Gleim allows you to do it all in little chunks. I think their system works the best for my study style.

I love your positive attitude…sometimes it's the unfortunate circumstances that remind us (or push us into) what we really want to do! Onward my friend….

    Skynet,

Almost exact same story. I left retail to study for the CPA exam full time. 6 years I was doing accounting. Like you I am banking everything on the hopes that my CPA license will land me a job in accounting again. Unlike the majority of the many ambitious CPA candidates on this forum I would be happy even with an entry level position. Hopefully 40k and up 😛

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

After working in retail for 9 years after my first degree I went back to school to qualify for the CPA. I am taking FAR on January 21st. Retail sucks big time but my wife just had a baby do it pays the bills. Gleim is a good course. If you have the money get the wiley test bank and ninja notes to supplement. There are some questions that are the same on gleim as wiley but I really think having over 3000 questions to do help a lot.

    FAR 62, 66, 78
    AUD 66, 55, 74, 72
    BEC 79
    REG

Be sure to do lots of practice questions! I truly believe that is the key to success on the exam. Knowing how the questions are worded and being able to pick out the “call” of the question quickly is key.

If you don't already have one, I would recommend creating a LinkedIn profile. Really do a good job and fill it out completely. Then, add as many people as possible and join some accounting-related groups. I get many hits from recruiters off LinkedIn on a daily basis. An attractive profile and active presence really helps.

    Good luck!

    BEC - 68, 76
    AUD - 90, 91
    FAR - 63, 83
    REG - 55, 79

    FINALLY DONE!

Thanks teeteenounouche. I know once I pass a few of the exams, doors of opportunities will open up. I just have to continue to put in the extra effort to pass.
