I work for PwC and it is my first week working for them. I work from 8 am till 6 pm Monday to Friday.it takes about an 45 mins to drive from home to work and the same time going back home, so in total around 12 hours are out of my control. I talked to my boss about releasing me early like around 3 or 4 pm so I could have enough time to study, but he refused, so I asked him if I can study, but he also refused because I will have so much work and I won’t be able to study.

PLEASE EVERYONE, I need you advise, I am going to have my FAR exam in May and I am wondering if I should leave PwC and just get all my free time for studying, or I should keep working and give a try if I can handle both CPA and work.

It's all about attitude. The first time I tried it, I sat there and was tired and overwhelmed and just dabbled at studying the multiple choice. I've found what works for me so I'm going with it.

This time it is all about doing it. I've gone too far to turn back now and with each section I give it my all and I can truly say…as can others who witness my dedication…that even if I fail a section, there was nothing I could have done any differently to pass.

Definitely use two different review courses, I found that Wiley (primary) and CPAExcel work well for me.

People have given you a hard time but my work product has suffered a little. It's just too much at 41 years old to juggle magnificently. Right now, I am just trying to keep the balls all in the air. Other than CPA, I'm not doing anything really well right now but luckily everyone is understanding. When I make it out of this employed, still married, with kids who will still talk to me (and with my license) it will be a great day.

@cory – I lol'd at how clueless your post was. Until you have kids, you have no clue what it would be like. No clue.

And you would be upset if your company didn't want you studying on their dime? Lol. You seem like the person who would have the company pay for your exams, let you study on their time, sign off on your experience, and then be screwed over by you showing no loyalty whatsoever and leaving right away. I could be wrong, but that's how your post came off to me.

Ok, so I'm going to try to be nice here, because I'm turning over a new leaf and nice is now part of my M.O. In all likelihood, telling your boss at a big 4 accounting firm that you would like reduced hours to study during busy season, was probably not the smartest idea. However, hindsight is 20/20, so now it's time to recover from your faux pas by working your ass off from here on out. Studying while working full time is going to be very difficult, but if you want it bad enough, you'll make it happen. It's all about hunger…the hungriest become the champions. One more note, DO NOT quit your job with the big 4…I don't care if your job makes you want to go home and cut yourself, having at least 2 years of big 4 experience (plus CPA) on your resume will open a lot of doors for you. I'm not necessarily touting the big 4, I think that plenty of people who never worked for the big 4 have become immensely successful. What I am saying, is that companies love seeing that on your resume. You would have to have a head full of rocks to leave that job right now. Quit when you have at least a couple years of experience. Best of luck!

“…being single is actually the toughest…”

Face palm. No offense, but you're wrong. Even if that's your opinion, well, your opinion is wrong 😉

Hahaha I have to admit, Mini, that made me chuckle. I'm still here, I'm just trying to be 10% less of an a-hole 😉 Truth be told, I orginally read through the thread, clicked down in the “reply” box and got ready to bang out a scathing diatribe, rallying against the mere notion that someone could tell their big 4 boss during busy season that they wanted a break in hours. But then I said, “woaahhhh nelly, let's take it down a notch and maybe try to get my point across without berating the poor fella”. Admittedly, not as satisfying 🙂

HAHA awesome. Just came home from a terrible day and this is the first thing I read. Love it. Thanks Baseball. I can be a b*tch in person. I don't take shit from anyone. But on here everyone is going through the same shitty torture. So you've got to represent and support! Even when you read something someone posted and they sound like a total f moron. (not relating to this thread at all I haven't really read anything but Baseballs & Mini's messages ha) But you know what I mean. Keep it classy 😛

Cory not everybody married w/kids is a husband fwiw. And while I respect guys who are doing this with families, a mom gets cut NO slack when she's studying for the CPA exams and works 36 hours per day minimum. I cooked every meal, did every load of laundry, attended every PTA meeting, girl scout meeting, doctor/dentist appointment, and helped with 5th and 12th grade homework respectively on a daily basis.Trust me when I tell you a single guy whose gf brings him meals would drop dead 8 hours into my day.

@CoryRudolph….I'm not sure where you are from but I am from the South. And when we basically want to say ‘you are so dumb, you don't know which way is up', we say “bless your heart”.

    Well, bless your heart.

I'll give you a little leeway since you don't have kids and attribute your post to ignorance. I've done it both ways, as a just married dude with no kids and what I THOUGHT was a pant load of responsibility. I'm also doing it now with two kids and a wife plus REAL responsibilities. There is no comparison. When you are studying you feel guilty for not spending time with the kids and when you spend time with the kids you feel guilty for not studying.

Case in point is that during my review, my daughter's school had a Father/Daughter dance this past Saturday. I went, because she's priority even above these tests, but it was hard to risk 6 weeks of study time on possibly missing points due to other responsibilities. Until you know what you don't know, you don't know.
