Maybe you should quit CPA - Page 3

Ok, this post is going to be a bit of a rant, complaining…

But the other day my “well-meaning” friend suggested I quit CPA after hearing how I had gotten sick after working long hours, trying to study, etc.

This just ENRAGES me. I think it wouldn’t bother me so much if it was the first time I had negative feedback about this pursuit.

    General comments, similar experiences?

The best comeback from one of my friends was if they don’t support me doing CPA, they are haters and don’t pay my bills.

Also, a becker teacher for god’s sake, said it didn’t make sense for me to do it because I am already in industry.

A VP at my company said that experience and performance is more important that CPA.

I could probably go on…but I have enough problems finding the motivation to spend hours on end studying while i’m learning a new stressful job at year end, and I don’t understand why anyone would say anything negative after i’m already HALFWAY through the process.

Oh another one, my old boss always makes fun of people getting their CPA. LIke I said, I could go on.

@PasstheCPA7 – Having many friends and clients who are both CPAs and JDs, I can tell you that they ALL say that the CPA exam is the hardest exam they have ever taken. I don't have any friends or clients who are both doctors and CPAs, but I can attest to the CPA/JD comparison.

My experience. I work for a subsidiary of a company on the LSE. I'm looking to get into the finance department. Director of Finance tells me after I interviewed for a position (didn't get it), “We'll be hiring in another 2-3 years for same position. In the mean time if you are serious about this I suggest you get either your MBA or CPA. It will be very beneficial to you in your future.” Now he calls and checks up on me as I started the exams. It kills me that I have to tell him when I fail but he tells me “you can fail as many times so long as you don't lose sight of the prize.” He has his CPA and I hear these days the big corporations expect you to have CPA or MBA to get the director positions, Not necessarily for the controller position though. I live in Las Vegas and CPA means a lot down on the strip. Even though i'm not in finance even my current boss tells me “What, will it take a year or so? Why wouldn't you do it?” when I asked him for his input. He supports me even knowing it means I will be moving on from his business unit some day. I have yet to have any negative feedback from friends/family and I even tell them my scores. They all keep pushing me. I'm sorry to hear you have such negative feedback at the work place. That's not cool.

It's total BS to say the CPA license doesn't matter in industry. There may be certain companies and certain managers who don't care about it, and I wouldn't waste my time working for those.

When I interviewed for my first job in accounting, my interviewer told me that not having the license would ultimately hurt my credibility because any interview I ever did, the question would come up as to why I hadn't gotten my license yet and if I planned to do it at some point. If you want to be upwardly mobile in the accounting profession, getting your CPA license is the most obvious thing you can do to help yourself. If you're not going to do that because you work in industry and you've been told “it doesn't matter,” well, you are just looking for the path of least resistance, and, in the process, severely limiting your options if you ever decide you want to do something else.

I was surprised I was hired for the job I have now because the CEO of my company is a CPA and thinks it is the be-all, end-all of professional certifications. However, I had experience that no one else they interviewed had, and they knew I was in the process of taking the exam, so they were willing to overlook it at the time. But they made it clear that I needed to pass the exam ASAP.

Thanks for sharing your story. That is great that you have encouragement at work to develop yourself. I was also reluctant to talk a whole lot about it at work because I didn't want them to know if I failed etc. but I put it on my performance review and job posting application (internal) – that I was pursuing it and passed one at that time. that boss was helpful but wasn't really interested in CPA. Anyway, my new position I have gotten some good feedback. I think until it becomes more common for there to be CPA's in industry the people that never got them are going to say, you don't need a CPA, or look at that young person they are book smart but don't have any common sense (that has a CPA), well I've heard these things.

I just found out I passed REG which means 3 done 1 to go so now that i'm this far I think i'm over whatever negative comments I have gotten. I think I was just more shocked I got negative comments. if anyone told me they were pursuing a degree or license, I would be supportive.

“Even a fool seems wise if he keeps silent”. When you see a hater, know they only wish fortune on themselves, often at the expense of others.

I've not been talking about the Exam unless that person has a CPA. No value is added to either party.

I had a Sunday morning where I slept til one PM! Missed church and everything. I had worked myself to exhaustion, and it got my attention. Health is important; I've started lifting weights as a means of keeping my health in check. Thirty minutes of hard lifting has really helped.

According to a friend who passed both Bar and CPA, CPA exam is much harder. No idea about the medical boards though.
